BERGAMO, Italy (AP) – Atalanta midfielder Matteo Pessina became the eighth player on the Italy team to test positive for the coronavirus after returning from the recent call-up for the World Cup qualifiers.
Atalanta reported Wednesday that Pessina contracted the virus, but has no symptoms and is isolated.
The Italian Soccer Federation revealed last week that four Azzurri staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
A day later, Juventus announced that defender Leonardo Bonucci tested positive after rejoining the club. Federico Bernardeschi, Alessandro Florenzi, Marco Verratti, Salvatore Sirigu, Vincenzo Grifo and Alessio Cragno also tested positive for swabs.
