Bill Gates and Melinda Gates announce divorce
Mr. Gates and his wife Melinda have announced that they are getting divorced after 27 years of marriage. The two met in the 1980s when Melinda joined Bill’s Microsoft firm and they have three children together. They started the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and have spent billions fighting causes, particularly those related to infectious diseases and vaccination programs.
Along with investor Warren Buffett, the Gates are behind the Giving Pledge, which asked billionaires to commit to donating most of their wealth to good causes.
They said in a statement that “they no longer believe that we can grow together as a couple.”
The couple tweeted: “After thinking a lot and working hard on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage.”
Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, first met Gates in October 2019, after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle parted ways with The Royal Foundation to start Sussex Royal.

The tech billionaire came to Kensington Palace to discuss their respective charities with royalty.
The low-key meeting was not announced in advance, but was recorded in the Court Circular, the official daily record of actual engagements.
On this occasion last year, William spoke to Gates by phone, it was revealed in the Court Circular, and then, on March 30 of this year, the couple spoke again via video link.
According to the editor of The Daily Mail’s Saturday newspaper, Richard Eden, William has become increasingly friendly with the philanthropist, hoping to raise funds for his projects.

He wrote last month: “Prince William enjoys a flourishing friendship with Bill Gates.
“I heard that the Duke of Cambridge held a meeting via video link with the American billionaire on Tuesday, his third such meeting in the space of three years.
“Surely the generous philanthropist Bill could be persuaded to use his £ 99 billion fortune to support the Royal William and Kate Foundation.
“As long as Prince Harry and Meghan don’t get to him first!”

Gates is currently the fourth richest man in the world, worth an estimated $ 124 billion (£ 89 billion) by Forbes.
He has donated $ 1.75bn (£ 1.27bn) to combat the coronavirus since the pandemic began through his foundation, especially by investing in vaccine development.
Gates described the pandemic as “an incredible tragedy” in an interview with Polish publications Gazeta Wyborcza and TVN24, but was optimistic that by the end of 2022 we should be “basically completely back to normal”.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private foundation in the world and the couple is estimated to have donated around £ 30 billion to charity.

His foundation focuses broadly on working “to help all people lead healthy and productive lives.”
Meanwhile, The Royal Foundation’s efforts have focused on mental health, early education, youth, wildlife conservation, and veteran issues.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also created their own organization called the Archewell Foundation.
The website says it aims to “lift and unite communities, local and global, online and offline, one act of compassion at a time.”
Some of her partnerships include the Center for Research and Education on Compassion and Altruism, which is researching the neuroscience of compassion, and the Loveland Foundation, which works to provide affordable and accessible mental health resources to black women and girls.
Harry and Meghan are working on this project independently, having stepped down as royalty last year.
