Staff at 22 Thomas Cook stores in Northern Ireland are referred to by Hays Travel as a "lifeline".

The Sunderland-based family business bought the company after collapsing in September and bogged down thousands of travelers.

A total of 20 former Thomas Cook stores in NI have already reopened their doors under the new management.

In Northern Ireland, 79 employees have been hired so far. Another 50 jobs are still to be filled.

Thomas Cook's Regional Sales Manager for Northern Ireland, Nicola Allison, said: "I'm delighted, it's an amazing thing that John and Irene have done for us – it's a lifeline.

"I worked for Thomas Cook for 24 years, but when I visited the Hays Travel Head Office in Sunderland, I realized that I was moving from one family to the next, and our employees really put their heart and soul into it we are so excited to welcome new and old customers back to our stores. "

Irene Hays, owner and chair of the Hays Travel Group, said: "Thomas Cook has been a popular brand and pillar of the UK and global travel industry, and we will build on the good things that Thomas Cook has had – not least his employees – and that will support us even better for the future. "

John Hays (Owner and Managing Director) added, "I'm very proud of the fantastic team that helped me build Hays Travel in almost 40 years, and they've worked tirelessly to achieve that over the last few weeks.

"It's a milestone for us as we've nearly tripled our business and doubled our workforce – and for the industry, which will retain some of its most talented employees – we're excited to be present in Northern Ireland for the first time.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for all of us and we can not wait to meet everyone soon!"

The 40-year-old Sunderland-based company generated more than £ 1 billion in sales in 2018 and shared £ 1 million with its 1900 employees, each receiving £ 100 for each year they worked there.
