Rionegro, with 14 positive cases of COVID-19; Pereira, 5

BOGOTÁ (AP) – The Rionegro and Deportivo Pereira clubs of the Colombian first division announced on Thursday, respectively, 14 and five positive cases of the coronavirus among their soccer players.

Rionegro confirmed that it had detected the cases after the 0-0 draw against local Atlético Junior on Sunday.

Pereira affirms that he obtained the results after beating Independiente Medellín 1-0 at home on Tuesday, which nevertheless accuses him of playing infected players and has requested a sanction that would consist of annulling the victory.

In addition to the 14 infected footballers, Rionegro reported that his doctor and all the members of his coaching staff tested positive. Consequently, he asked for the postponement of his next match.

“We have raised the request for the suspension of the game scheduled for next Sunday, April 11 at 3:30 pm in front of Boyacá Chicó in the city of Rionegro, in order to preserve the integrity of the competition,” indicated the Golden Eagles in a statement.

Pereira confirmed 14 positive cases in his organization, including five footballers. He maintained that the tests carried out before the match against Medellín were negative, but the post-match analyzes were positive.

The team did not specify the names of the infected players, nor did it clarify whether they played the match.

Daniel Ossa, president of Independiente Medellín, affirmed on Thursday that he has versions according to which Pereira lined up infected footballers. He therefore asked the Dimayor Professional League to investigate the case.

The team, determined to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament, issued a statement, in which it explained that it has asked Dimayor to award the points it lost with Pereira.

Chicó also asked to cancel the triumph of Pereira, one of his rivals in the fight to avoid relegation.

Fernando Jaramillo, president of Dimayor, announced that “the responsibility in a case as delicate as this one” has already been ascertained.

“The first responsibility is of the medical bodies of the clubs and clubs so that the footballers can play,” said the leader in the digital edition of the newspaper El Tiempo de Bogotá.
