Justin Bieber is the last high-profile person to talk about the fight against Lyme disease, joining a list of celebrities that includes Bella Hadid, Alec Baldwin and Ben Stiller.
“It has been a difficult couple of years,” the 25-year-old wrote on Instagram, adding that he had “had a severe case of chronic mono that affected my skin, brain function, energy and overall health.”
In 2017, former England rugby player Matt Dawson talked about how he contracted the disease while taking a leisurely walk in the English woods with his children. He was bitten by a tick, although he didn’t notice it at the time. Dawson revealed that he was later diagnosed with bacterial infection, Lyme disease and had to undergo multiple heart operations and 18 months of treatment to get rid of what that little tick had given him.
“It was something I had always associated with places abroad, on the continent, in America, wherever there were deer,” said Dawson, addressing his naivety around the disease. “There is no way I would have walked through a forest or forest with my children and gone home and thought,” Well, I’ll just check a few ticks just to make sure everything is fine. “I wouldn’t have thought about it.”
