HUndreds of properties is at risk from Storm Dennis, the environment agency said, as the worst winter flooding is expected to hit Britain.
The Met Office has predicted that 1,200-mile-wide Storm Dennis will bring a month of rain in just 24 hours when it arrives in the UK tomorrow.
Many cities and villages have not yet been recovered by Storm Ciara and the water has not yet been discharged from the flood plains and other defenses. Some of the hardest hit areas suffered snow shortly thereafter, and this will melt when heavy rain hits the weekend, causing even more water to flood in affected communities.
Paul Davis, chief meteorologist for the Met Office, said: “With Ciara the rain has been strong but rapid.
“With Dennis we are concerned about the longevity of the rain.”
