Apple AirTags are official: price, features and release date | Gadgets

For months we had known exactly Apple’s plans to put on sale a small locator device to attach it to all kinds of objects, such as the famous Tiles that have been on the market for years. It’s more, the definitive clue was given by Samsung when at its presentation event at the beginning of the year it did the same with SmartTags: it was evident that a confluence of locator beacons was going to take place together with those of Cupertino.

AirTags Features. Apple

As it is, of everything we saw yesterday again in the keynote from Apple, the most original of all were the AirTags, although we only consider it for its status as a new range that officially arrives on the market for the first time, such as a line of products that until now did not exist within the portfolio of the Americans. With them, we can keep localized everything that we use daily and that is of vital importance to us: keys, bags, coats, umbrellas …

Small and customizable

AirTags are a small device that looks like a super-vitamin button cell battery. will stay localized thanks to its bluetooth LE connectivity, capable of extending its autonomy for a little over a year without the need to replace the battery inside. There, precisely, a small U1 chip is installed capable of offering a lost mode thanks to the NFC that it also equips and, how could it be otherwise, it has IP67 certification that gives it resistance to liquids and dust.

The first real images of Apple AirTags are filtered | Gadgets

It was one of the products that everyone expected to see at the keynote presentation of the new iPhone 12 on October 13 but, in the end, those from Cupertino left us with honey on our lips. And is that These AirTags have been ringing for months, practically since evidence began to appear of its existence in the logs of some beta versions of iOS 13.

Now it seems that the thing is serious and that Apple prepares the launch of these smart stickers that we can adhere to any object to have it constantly controlled, and that will allow us to make the house or car keys, a bag, a coat or any object that does not have mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity, always available to be found by simply tapping on the screen of our iPhone.

First real pictures

Until now, all the images that existed of the AirTags were renders based on the testimonies of people who had seen them, so they were still inventions with part of reality. Now, it has been the famous leaker of the current Apple, Jon Prosser, who has gone a step further by publishing in one of his videos on YouTube a small excerpt from a material that he claims is for the internal consumption of those in Cupertino.

In that little fragment an AirTag can be seen circling around itself in such a way that its design can be appreciated and shape without problems (minute 6:50). It must be said that since it is a gadget that we will carry attached to a different object, it remains to be seen what will be the mechanism that the North Americans have devised to fix it without losing it since, unlike the Tiles sold by Amazon (or future Samsung Smart Tags), it does not seem that have a hole through which to insert, for example, the typical ring of a keychain.

In these images of the video you can read, on the back of the AirTag, the typical legends of Apple products (design in California and assembly in China) as well as two other very interesting ones: “Bluetooth LE” and “Ultra Wideband”, which will be the two types of connection that have to point out the location of any of them. Although there is no confirmed launch date, it is traditional in Californians to always release products in the month of March, which could happen this year around this new range of products.

Apple AirTags may soon launch in two sizes

Apple AirTags could be announced in November

Everything seems to indicate that Apple has few announcements left for this 2020. Among the most anticipated are the new Mac with chip Apple Silicon and, of course, the AirTags, which could be announced over the next few months.

A reliable source such as L0veToDream, has posted a couple of tweets that refer to the company’s next accessory. In a first tweet he mentions the tag ‘TAG’ and the second tweet mentions ‘big and small, coming soon’.

These words seem to suggest that Apple has two AirTags size options in the works. On the other hand, Jon Prosser has corroborated the report and it may all be true, since the smaller model is designed for purses or keys, while the larger ones could be made for backpacks or other larger products.

AirTags are expected to have a small rubber disc design and arrive together with a leather support. They will work with the U1 Ultra Wideband chip and should allow for more accurate item tracking than regular Bluetooth trackers. For now there is no information about its launch, but this could be given in November.
