The small cult car gets a modern electric drive. After the first trip, our author was completely smitten. The test. From
Que bello! How nice! The new generation of the Fiat 500 also has conqueror qualities. The outside of the little Casanova from Turin was only redesigned with light strokes of the pen. The real charm is under the bonnet: Arrivederci combustion engine, ciao electric motor! After the test drive we were blown away: The fast 118 hp whisper engine is convincing in itself. However, the range of more than 300 kilometers brings the small car very close to everyday practicality.
The new Cinquecento is even prettier than the old one
Appearance is in
Italy at least as important as the inner values. The new Cinquecento looks like the old one. Only finer. So the headlights were split, the upper arc now sits like an eyebrow on the bonnet. The 500 lettering is emblazoned in the middle of the radiator grille, and the rear taillights form an E for electric. Inside, the dwarf from Turin has grown: in length and width by around six, in height by three centimeters. The interior is stylish and can be designed individually. Here and there there are optical gimmicks. For example the silhouette of Turin stamped into the cell phone compartment. The birthplace of the Cinquecento.
The Fiat 500 is incredibly agile
And this is how the chic lifestyler drives: The Fiat 500 is so manoeuvrable – it could almost turn over on a tiramisu plate. It is actually 9.7 meters. This means that the small car is well equipped for the city. The chassis is comfortable – but a tad too spongy. On bad roads you feel like you are on the high seas with strong waves. The e-machine, on the other hand, reacts lively, reaching 50 km / h in three seconds, making its driver the king of traffic lights in the city.
That’s the range of the electric Fiat 500
In contrast to the combustion engine, you don’t have to atone for the pressure on the power pedal when it comes to consumption. Because when braking, the 500 recovers energy. Especially with one-pedal driving. At the highest recuperation level, the engine decelerates so much that you hardly have to brake anymore. This opens up new dimensions of driving fun that were previously reserved for caretakers of ride-on lawnmowers. The best: thanks to energy recovery, the urban range increases from 300 to 400 kilometers. Most people should be able to manage a week without an electrical outlet.
The Fiat 500 needs 15 hours to charge
Charging is hardly suitable for everyday use. With an empty battery, it takes over 15 hours via the household connection. It’s faster with a wallbox. With up to 11 kW, the battery is full again in around four hours. But beware! Because of the German unbalanced load regulation, there is hardly more than 4.6 kW available in the home. This means that the 42 kW battery only reports full cells in just over 10 hours. With an 85 kW fast charger, the Fiat is filled to 80 percent in 35 minutes. In other words: the 500 Fiat “refuels” a range of 50 kilometers in five minutes. As long as it takes for a good espresso at the bar.
An additional door that opens to the rear as in the original model
When it comes to body variants, the customer can choose the new 3 + 1 model. On the passenger side there is an additional door that opens to the rear like the original 500 from 1957. The back row of seats is easier to use because of the missing partition column. With the installation of a child seat, for example, or to stow away the weekend shopping. This extra costs extra – exactly 2000 euros.

Discovering silence in an electric car is an amazing experience. Only wind and rolling noise. With one exception. The Fiat 500 can be heard up to 20 km / h. He has to, so that pedestrians don’t overlook the little Italian. While others have an artificial electro sound somewhere between Star Wars and Avengers, the Turinese say: play me the song of the Oscar winner. The melody comes from the film composer Nino Rota (“The Godfather”) and sounds like the happy ending of a love story. That fits the new Fiat 500 – after all, it should be a car to fall in love with.
