▷ The new virtual BlizzCon will be free for everyone: Blizzard says goodbye to the classic ticket in this edition

BlizzConline will be the event to learn more about Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, and other games.

Blizzard It has been holding a face-to-face event for 15 years where it announces news for its video games, and where fans can meet to participate in all kinds of activities related to their favorite titles. As we already knew, the 2020 pandemic has caused this BlizzCon to become “BlizzConline“an exclusively digital edition destined to maintain tradition from a safer perspective. And with this new format, they also arrive monetization changes.

In a video reviewing Blizzard-related news, products and services, President J. Allen Brack announces that BlizzConline, dated to February 19 and 20, will be free for all viewers. This is, in part, a first for the event: although the opening ceremony has always been free to watch, the rest of the tournaments, contests and collectibles were part of a virtual ticket of 40 dollars / euros.

In spite of everything, a good part of the activities which WoW parents are accustomed to, including competitions, cosplay contests or the fun march of the murlocs, where fans interpret these tribal fish with greater or lesser visual fidelity. Of course, we will also have ads.

In this edition, we will have to closely track Overwatch 2 Y Diablo IV, among other novelties. The former will add campaign heroes and PvE content to Blizzard’s cooperative shooter, while the latter will take a more sinister and traditional approach to the loot progression-based RPG series. Neither has a release date for now.

‘Star Wars: Squadrons’, at the controls of the galaxy | Blog 1 UP

The Galactic Empire has fallen, Palpatine has died – or so they believed – and the second Death Star has exploded in the orbit of Endor. Its pieces are scattered to the surrounding places, and although the old emperor’s throne remains largely intact, the unified power of yesteryear is decomposing like the planet Alderaan, home to Princess Leia and her father, Senator Bail Organa. Its destruction was not the end of the rebellion, but a spark that reinforced all the convictions of the movement. Star Wars: Squadrons, developed by EA Motive Studios, is set between the events of Return of the Jedi and of The Force Awakens, a period in which the New Republic tries to take control of the galaxy once and for all.

In such a vast territory it is logical to think that the end of a political structure does not destroy all institutions from one day to the next. Grand Moffs, admirals, generals and stormtroopers remain on the warpath. For this reason, the new Electronic Arts production explores that time of uncertainty, in which the forces of the New Republic face the ashes of the Empire. Share historical period with the video game Star Wars Battlefront II and the seriesThe Mandalorian, the first of the saga in real action. The particularity is that this product is exclusively focused on space battles.

The two sides of the war

The warlike drive between the two factions is reflected in the title, which captures the vision of each of them and lets us handle characters from both sides. After the destruction of Alderaan, Darth Vader orders his fleet to hunt down the refugees who have fled the planet. It is then that Captain Lindon Javes realizes that he did not enlist to murder innocent refugees, so he turns against the Empire and joins the rebels. Captain Terissa Kerrill will suffer it as a personal blow, a fact that is explained because Lindon had served as a mentor since entering the Imperial ranks. In the plot of Star Wars: Squadrons, the relationship between these two protagonists partly conveys their actions, despite the fact that both keep their respective objectives always in mind. Her loyalty to the Galactic Empire is unshakable, as she believes that she has given her everything: she went from an orphan child to the captain of her own Star Destroyer.

The New Republic Vanguard Squad introduces us to the thoughts of the former rebels, now part of the legitimate government. The war continues on its way, but things have changed since the victory at the Battle of Endor. Feresk Tssat, better known as Frisk, is one of the characters who expresses his doubts to his squadmates. The Trandoshans, a reptilian race of hunters, have generally been portrayed as unscrupulous beings, usually aligned with the Galactic Empire or bounty hunters from the underworld. Although Frisk is not entirely comfortable with the drift of the New Republic, to which he blames that he can no longer perform illegal maneuvers, in the end he decides to stay because he believes in the cause and in his companions. His superior, General Hera Syndulla, is an old acquaintance of the new Disney canon. Fans of Star Wars Rebels they will be happy to see her in action again.

Within Titan Squad, on the imperial side, the character profile is not homogeneous either. Some consider the reinstatement of the Senate as necessary, while others consider that with his return the bureaucracy will return. The struggle for power is glimpsed in several sequences, in which some officers refuse to respect the chain of command (Kerrill’s orders come from Admiral Sloane) and try to impose their authority. Within the roster of protagonists, perhaps somewhat archetypal, the figure of Shen stands out, a veteran who has lost some battles, but not the war. Half man, half machine, he has left several his bones and some limbs in combat. We never see his face, because he hides it under a worn and gaunt pilot’s helmet.

As in the movies and other recent products from Star Wars, Motive Studios has bet on diversity. I liked the ease with which Varko Gray, another veteran of the Imperial ranks, talks about his future when the war is over. Her dream is to settle in a quiet place by the sea in the company of her husband. Since the Disney canon was implemented, there have already been other homosexual characters, such as Moff Delian Mors or Shinjir Rath Velus in the novels Star Wars: The Sith Lords Y Star Wars: Aftermath respectively. Gray is the first gay man in video games based on the galactic saga.

'Star Wars: Squadrons', at the controls of the galaxy

In the plot, Star Wars: Squadrons it doesn’t shine too brightly, although the appeal of its universe and the little stories help channel the missions of the main story. From a narrative point of view, choosing a silent protagonist has not been the best idea. The dialogues feel somewhat forced because the character does not answer and there are no dialogue options. Furthermore, the conversations that take place in the hangar are somewhat static, since the protagonist does not move freely, he moves through designated points of interest. In other words: you jump from dialogue to dialogue and from the main hangar to the saga of operations.

The moment of truth: pilot a ship and survive to tell the tale

The campaign works as a kind of tutorial, which does not mean that it does not offer great moments. In fact, the missions are very varied, with very different objectives that invite us to use the deep playable system that EA Motive has designed. What I have missed are the battles under the sky of the planets. For example in Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, we experienced the Battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back on T-47 hovercraft. Luke Skywalker devises an alternative strategy that involves using tow cables to trip walkers. In Squadrons, all the action takes place in space, sometimes very close to the planets, but never in their atmosphere.

We control 8 different ships (4 for each side), among which are the classic X-wing and Y-wing models of the Rebel Alliance or the different variants of the imperial TIEs, each one with its characteristics, armament, weaknesses and strengths own. Customization, which allows you to combine different aspects, expands the options for players to build their ideal ship.

The single player mode gradually introduces all the concepts we need to master the ship perfectly, but doing so requires practice, as the possibilities are not exactly limited. Controlling one of these ships involves managing the speed, the angle of the wings, the different classes of weapons or the ammunition available. If we take damage, we can ask our astrodroid to fix the helmet, although afterwards the option will be temporarily disabled until a while. Once we have mastered all the systems, we can even skid, escape enemy missiles and intercept this type of weaponry.

'Star Wars: Squadrons', at the controls of the galaxy

In a similar way, on both sides, we must take into account the element that we want to promote at all times. If we need more attack power, the ideal will be to divert all the energy to the weapons, while if we seek protection we may have to send all that energy to the shields. On the contrary, on other occasions, maneuverability and speed will be more important, so that all the power will have to be focused on the engines. If we seek balance, there is also an option for the energy to move homogeneously throughout the ship. These concepts are simple on paper, but applying them to every situation requires progressive learning.

Between explosions and laser shots, the player pursues their targets and attempts to shoot down a target or defend an allied position. With the push of a button on a corvette or a starfighter, for example, the protagonist can ask the rest of his squad to attack with everything he has or to defend the ship tooth and nail.

The 10 hours of the main campaign is a good introduction to multiplayer online, which is the core of this project. Here yes, customization is much more important, since the changes not only affect aesthetics, but also gameplay. Latest update has added a Baby Yoda ornament (The Mandalorian) for the cabin of the republican ships, but to achieve it you will have to invest the virtual money that you earn during the games. Notably, EA has completely dispensed with microtransactions. All items and upgrades are obtained by playing, without cheating or cardboard.

'Star Wars: Squadrons', at the controls of the galaxy

The developers have conceived this project as something closed, in the old way. They don’t plan no kind of expansion or DLC; Nor make it a game as a service. It is in its multiplayer approach that the lack of new content and game modes will weigh. Skirmish faces teams of five drivers with a very specific objective: to be the first to cause 30 casualties. Fleet battle, for its part, is a modality that is not accessible from the beginning, since it requires a certain level. Deploy on the space battlefield both enemies controlled by other players and controlled by artificial intelligence. We will have to shoot down those ships to obtain morale, which will provide us with access to complete the final objective. Being a competitive mode, communication between squad members can make the difference between victory and defeat.

Star Wars: Squadrons It is 100% playable in virtual reality (compatible with Steam VR and PS VR). I put on the Oculus Quest headset with the Oculus Link cable connected to the computer. Suddenly, I found myself inside the cockpit of a TIE fighter and felt like I was in one of the space battles in the series. However, the bliss didn’t last long, as I soon realized that my graphics card wasn’t powerful enough to perform well in VR. And still, it took me a few seconds to realize that Squadrons it is an absolutely immersive experience in virtual reality. There is no better way to get to the controls of the ship; now it only remains to conquer the galaxy. You choose the side.

It will soon be a year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left for the United States never to return. They announced it on January 18 after spending more than a month on vacation in Los Angeles, where they spent Christmas with Meghan’s mother instead of with the Royal Family, as had been tradition.

By Vanity Fair

Of course, before formally abandoning their life as royals, the Sussexes returned to the UK in March to say goodbye and finalize the deals for their long-awaited freedom, which was finally granted by Queen Elizabeth II in April. And since then, they have never seen each other again in person.

That is why all the British people were anxious to know how the next Christmas would go when Harry and Meghan had to return yes or yes to England. Although not for pleasure, but because on January 11 the trial that the dukes are holding against Associated Newspaper, which owns several tabloids, is scheduled to be held in London, which they accuse of publishing false information about them.

A legal battle that demands that the couple be present in the courtroom, something that in order to comply with it forces them to travel to England two weeks before the date of the trial to keep the corresponding quarantine that the British government requires of those who enter the country from United States.

But according to what has just been learned, finally that Christmas return could not take place. Well, the judge in charge of the case accepted the formal request that Harry and Meghan’s lawyers have sent to delay this meeting in court for several months.

StarCraft 2 stops producing content 10 years after launch, but Blizzard will keep it alive

It seems that new games based on the franchise are not being ruled out, with no sequel announced yet.

In July 2010 it was put on sale StarCraft 2, a game that has remained the dominant RTS as it was with its predecessor. Now, Blizzard announces the cessation of development of new content for this title, which means that we will not have more commanders or chests to buy. But that does not necessarily mean that he will die.

Of course, the lack of news will put off many players, but the servers will remain active as up to now and their developers have confirmed that we will continue to have updates with balance adjustments and bug fixes, “focusing primarily on what matters most to our core and competitive community.”

StarCraft 2 Image

Qualifying this last point, Blizzard ensures that SC2 will continue to maintain its usual representation in the eSports scene from the hand of ESL Gaming and GSL. What about the IP as such? In the past, the Warcraft fathers had no qualms about listing their most relevant games for the future. Right now StarCraft doesn’t have a sequel on the horizon, but it seems that something like this is not ruled out.

Or at least, it is what can be read between the lines following the closing of the entry. Producer Rob Bridenbecker concludes, “We will keep you posted on any and all plans we have for future forays into the Koprulu sector.” In the absence of something more specific, we remind you that Blizzard has announced Overwatch 2 Y Diablo IV (plus the spin-off Immortal) as well as the imminent expansion Shadowlands WoW, so it will surely be a while until we see their next big game.
