Mexico City. The Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) announced that this Sunday the phase III clinical trial of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by CanSino Biologics began in Guerrero, which will be carried out in health centers of that entity.
In a statement, the federal agency reported that phase III of the clinical trials of the candidate vaccines in Mexico “is of the greatest relevance since it will allow us to know their effects in different segments of our population.”
The Foreign Ministry said that through its Undersecretariat for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, it has established the communication channel in real time between the country’s authorities and the relevant international bodies in relation to the application of this phase of the antidote.
On Tuesday, November 3, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón reported during the morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that on October 30 the doses for phase III of the vaccine developed by the Chinese laboratory arrived in the country. He said that between 10 and 15 thousand Mexican volunteers, over 18 years of age, will participate for the application of the doses in 20 health centers distributed in 12 entities of the country, which – underlined the SRE – were selected based on “their high rigor scientific”.
The start-up ceremony was attended by the head of said undersecretary, Martha Delgado; the governor of Guerrero, Héctor Astudillo Flores; and the State Secretary of Health, Carlos de la Peña Pintos.
Delgado highlighted the importance of coordination between international entities and local governments for the optimal advancement of phase III of the vaccine.
He affirmed that the timely and fluid exchange of information is one of the most relevant tools during this stage, and reiterated that “thanks to the coordination with local governments and international entities, Mexico is part of the most advanced research processes to have an effective and safe vaccine against Covid-19 ”.
During his speech, Governor Astudillo said: “Today we received in the state the research product from the CanSino Biotech laboratory to begin phase III of the tests in volunteers, which, once this phase is overcome, will become the vaccine against Covid -19 “.
While the state Secretary of Health stressed that: “Guerrero is managing to stop the infections in key municipalities such as Acapulco, the most affected. In addition to this, the influenza vaccination campaign has started, so that we can maintain a wide availability of beds ”.
The SRE recalled that Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón has carried out “a solid diplomatic strategy to combat Covid-19”, based on the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to strengthen ties of international solidarity in the face of the pandemic .
“This strategy has included collaboration with the health sector through the coordination of our representations abroad for the supply of medical supplies for health workers, the first line of defense in the fight against the pandemic, as well as the expansion of specialized hospital capacity for the reception of acute cases of the disease. In addition, the SRE has managed to receive international donations ”, he remarked in the statement.
From the Foreign Ministry, he added, a comprehensive strategy has also been undertaken to search for a safe and effective vaccine against Covid-19 that includes a multilateral front in which Mexico participates in COVAX, a body attached to the World Health Organization; a diplomatic front that has established agreements with governments and laboratories with more promising and advanced protocols, such as AstraZeneca together with the University of Oxford, Pfizer and CanSino; and a national aspect of the diplomatic strategy that implies collaboration between Mexican research centers with international entities.
He added that the vaccine in question has already gone through a rigorous testing process of its phases I and II with a wide degree of success.
“The Mexican health authorities, as well as other international ones, have all the information on the previously applied vaccine and will have real-time information on the development of phase III in Mexico. Our health authority already has access to the results of preclinical and clinical trials of phases I and II. The protocol and authorization of the participating health centers went through a rigorous evaluation process led by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks, a regulatory entity of our country ”.
The trial of this phase III will be carried out in different health centers throughout the country selected on the basis of their high scientific rigor.
The SRE thanked the government of Guerrero for the coordination established for this task. “Our country takes an important step to guarantee the right to health of our population, as well as universal access to the vaccine against Covid-19 in an effective and safe way,” the Foreign Ministry concluded.
