A goal in the final minutes by Ecuadorian Felipe Caicedo gave a decimated Lazio a 1-1 draw against Zenit St. Petersburg for the Champions League, where Manchester United fell in Istanbul in another group.
Aleksandr Erokhin put Zenit in the lead in the first half of the Group F match, played in Russia in front of several thousand spectators allowed by local regulations, before substitute Caicedo tied for the Romans with eight minutes remaining with a left foot from near the penalty spot.
Lazio, which has five points from three games, said on the eve of the match that some team members had tested positive for COVID-19 before traveling to Russia.
Caicedo has grown used to being Lazio’s savior coming off the bench, scoring crucial goals in the closing minutes, most recently in a 4-3 win over Torino on Sunday in Serie A.
In another match played in the first round on Wednesday, United fell 2-1 away from Group H to Istanbul Basaksehir. The Turkish team was left with 3 points, the same as PSG and Leipzig who faced each other later. The “Red Devils” are leaders of the zone with six units.
