Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol gave life to Raj Malhotra and Simran Singh, protagonists of Dilwale dulhania le jayenge (DDLJ), the Bollywood film that this October 20 celebrated the 25th anniversary of its premiere. In honor of the romance that crossed borders to become a momentous piece of world cinematography, the famous actors will have a statue in London’s Leicester Square.
The sculpture, made of bronze, will recreate a famous scene from Love through thick and thin (for its title for the Latin public) recorded in the aforementioned square which, with its more than 400 years of history, is considered an important record of England.
The Indian Express quotes Mark Williams, Director of Destination Marketing at Heart of London Business Alliance, regarding the specific motivation behind erecting the commemorative figure of DDLJ.
“It is fantastic to add international film titans like Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to our path. Dilwale dulhania le jayenge is one of the most successful and important Bollywood films of all time, and it is exciting to be able to bring the first film that truly presents Leicester Square as a location.
This statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood and the cultural bridges that cinema can help build. We have no doubt that it will attract fans from all over the world, “says the authority.
Just as DDLJ, written and directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra, first portrayed Leicester Square as a location in Mark Williams’s words, it will become the first indian movie which will feature a monument in England.
Also, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, today 55 and 46 years old, respectively, will join the olympus of key film figures who have been immortalized on location through statues, including Laurel and Hardy, Bugs Bunny, Mary Poppins, Mr. Bean, Wonder Woman, Batman and Gene Kelly.
