The coronavirus pandemic originating in the Chinese city of Wuhan has registered a record 642,724 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to more than 49 million infected people and 1.24 million fatalities, according to the balance updated yesterday from Johns Hopkins University. With the new data, the balance of the pandemic rises to 49,323,498 infected people, of which more than half are in the three most affected countries -the United States, India and Brazil-, and the fatalities are already 1,242. 873.

In Argentina there are 1.22 million infected people and 33,136 fatalities. It is followed by the United Kingdom, which accounts for 1.14 million infected and 48,565 deaths and Colombia, which accumulates 1.12 million cases and 32,405 deaths. The balance of the pandemic in Mexico stands at 955,128 cases and 94,323 fatalities.
Next, Peru registers 914,722 infected people and 34,730 deaths, while Italy accumulates 862,681 infections and 40,638 deaths. South Africa, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent, registers 734,175 cases and 19,749 deaths.
Over 500,000 cases, Iran registers 663,800 positives and 37,409 fatalities, ahead of Germany, which accumulates 653,992 infections and 11,240 deaths, and Chile, with 518,390 positives and 14,450 deaths.
With more than 400,000 positives are Poland, with 493,765 cases and 7,287 deaths; Iraq, with 493,139 positives and 11,244 deaths; Belgium has 488,044 cases and 12,708 deaths; Ukraine, 453,565 cases and 8,358 deaths; Indonesia, with 429,574 positives and 14,442 fatalities; Bangladesh, with 417,475 cases and 6,036 deaths; The Netherlands, with 404,392 and 7,654 deaths; and the Czech Republic with 403,497 cases and 4,484 deaths.
In the range of 300,000 infections are the Philippines (391,809); Turkey (389,256); Saudi Arabia (349,822); Pakistan (341,753) and Israel (318,402). Among the 200,000 to 300,000 infections are Romania (287,062), Canada (258,874), Morocco (246,349) and Switzerland (211,913). For its part, the United Kingdom has banned people from Denmark from entering its territory due to the mutated strain of the coronavirus detected in mink farms and to which more than 200 cases in people are linked. The measure came into force yesterday and specifies that British citizens and people with a residence permit can return to the country but will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine.
