Tamron’s latest fast zoom telephoto lens for Sony mirrorless cameras goes on sale on May 14. The development of the Tamron 70-180mm f / 2.8 Di III VX was first announced in October last year and will complete a trio of f / 2.8 zooms with a constant fast aperture for the popular E Sony mount.
The new telephoto zoom lens offers a shorter focal range than the classic 70-200mm f / 2.8 which is traditionally used by professionals and enthusiasts – but the reduced 70-180mm zoom range has allowed Tamron to achieve a 45% smaller lens than I would otherwise have been.
As such, the lens is the smallest and lightest f / 2.8 telephoto lens in its class, measuring only 149mm in length (when shot down with a 70mm setting) and weighing a meager 810g.
The 70-180mm f / 2.8 features Tamron’s first linear AF motor drive mechanism, VXD (“Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive”), which the manufacturer promises is not only fast and silent, but “maintains the position accuracy down to 0.005 mm (0.0002 in), less than a tenth the width of a human hair! ”
Developed with the concept of “making wide-angle zoom lenses intuitive”, the 70-180mm f / 2.8 offers users a portrait and telephoto option to complement the current Wide angle zoom Tamron 17-28mm f / 2.8 RXD and standard zoom 28-75mm f / 2.8 RXD.
70-180mm F / 2.8 has an optical construction of 19 elements in 14 groups. Includes a total of six combined XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) and hybrid aspherical lens elements. The lens uses the same 67mm lenses as the other two zooms in its family (including the first 20mm, 24mm and 35mm recent).
Other features include moisture resistant construction for added weather protection and fluorine coating on the front element for easy maintenance. Furthermore, the 70-180mm f / 2.8 is said to be fully compatible with various Sony-specific features, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF (presumably simplified since Sony is a minor shareholder of Tamron).
The minimum focus during normal operation is 0.85 m (33.5 inches), but when switching to manual focus this decreases to only 0.27 m (10.6 inches), offering a magnification of 1 : 2 for extreme close-ups. This high magnification mode offers “Sweet Spot” style images in which only the central part of the frame is focused, with the edges noticeably blurred.
