The £ 90k salaries prevented West Brom from hiring Bilic’s favorite; scored nine in 15 since

Coventry, Wycombe, Anglia, Cape Ghana Coast; no matter what the destination is, Andre Ayew scores wherever he goes.

The ever-dependable playmaker has Swansea City fans dreaming of a Welsh representative in the Premier League once again, and on Thursday it was he who brought Ghana one step closer to qualifying for the African Cup of Nations at the next year.

Ayew’s double in a 2-0 win over Sudan means he already has nine goals for his club and his country this season. And, when you consider that the campaign has only 15 games, that’s a tally.

It’s fair to say that West Bromwich Albion could only dream of a striker as deadly as that.

The Sun (15 Oct, page 53) claims the shy Baggies at least tried to reunite Slaven Bilic with a man for whom his West Ham United team paid £ 20 million in 2016.

But with Ayew in command of £ 90,000 a week wages, any hope of a link between Bilic and his ex Hammer was dashed on the deadline.

The question now is whether Bilic under pressure can find enough firepower elsewhere to steer West Brom away from the dreaded relegation zone.

The signs don’t look good.

The rebounding Baggies did much better defensively in last week’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham, but, not for the first time, they squandered a number of opportunities. It remains one of the three winless teams in the Premier League to have scored fewer goals as a team (six) than Ayew has on his own.

Only Callum Robinson has scored more than once.

That is not to say that Bilic’s team has no potential to score goals.

Robinson and Karlan Grant, a summer signing for £ 15 million, found goals relatively easy to come by at the championship level. Meanwhile, Matheus Pereira, Conor Gallagher and Grady Diangana have the technical ability to thrive in the former division.

But until West Brom starts scoring, not to mention winning, Ayew’s clinical completion will continue to draw envious glances from the Black Country.

After all, no one on Bilic’s team is able to sniff out scoring opportunities like Ayew.
