The Cangas Climate Plan rises from 12 to 43 days of heat waves in 90 years

The City Council of Cangas has joined the Covenant of Mayors launched by the European Commission in 2008 to mitigate the effects of climate change and has drawn up an Action Plan for Climate and Energy (PACES) that the Councilor for the Environment, Hugo Fandiño (PSOE), wants to bring the plenary session on December 4. It is a document with almost a hundred pages which outlines a series of measures to reduce the municipality’s equivalent CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030, in addition to assessing the risks and vulnerabilities of climate change in the location.

The analysis of the indicators included in this plan confirms the increasing trend in temperatures in the municipality of Cangas. This threat is currently low, although the increase in temperatures, the number of warm days and nights, as well as the increase in the duration of heat waves and, consequently, the need for cooling produced can already be verified. between 2010 and 2020. A pronounced increase in these values ​​is expected for the next 10 years, figures that will continue to increase less markedly by 2100.

According to the table of the work carried out, the maximum temperature indicator appears in 2010 with an average of 16.59 degrees Celsius, of 16.81, in 2020 and an increase of one degree in the projection of 2030, with 17.44 degrees and two more in the 2100 projection, with 19.7.

Regarding the duration of heat waves, the study considers an average of 11.67 days in 2010, 12 in 2020 and increases three more days in the projection that it makes on the horizon of 2030, with 15.25 and it shoots up to 43, 31 in the year 2100.

Between 2010 and 2020, the average number of warm days increased by almost 6 days, which represents almost 15% of its value and with respect to the projections between 2020 and 2030, the number of these days increased by 33% . The mean in 2010 was 41 days; 2020 appears with 46.94, 2030 appears with 62.69 and 2100 with 117.8. It is seen that the projection for that year considerably increases the figure, going from representing a sixth of the total days of the year in 2030 to representing almost a third .

Warm nights is also an indicator that the study analyzes. The number of warm nights in the last decade, the average number of days increased by 8 and the projection in this same time will be 21 days, following the increase to 2100 with an average of 40.41. These values ​​are in line with the increase in warm days and duration of heat wave days.

On the contrary, in terms of days with minimum temperatures below zero degrees, the tendency is for the disappearance of days of frost in the municipality. Regarding rainfall, the study appreciates notable changes in the decrease in the number of rainy days and the increase in the number of consecutive days without precipitation. Also that the maximum precipitation will increase in 24 hours, which implies that the rains will be more torrential, which may cause soil erosion. Floods are another indicator. Cangas is located in a low danger zone and risk of flooding, according to the special Civil Protection plan against the risk of flooding in Galicia, Indungal. The plan also focuses on the Presa, Bouzós and Pontillón rivers.

The City Council reduces CO2 emissions by 928 tons

One of the objectives is the reduction of CO2 emissions derived from energy consumption. As a reference year, PACES includes 2015 and the nearest date, 2019. Five years ago, the emissions due to electricity consumption by the City Council (installations and public lighting) were 1738.79 tons of CO2 and those produced by the Fuel consumption of the municipal mobile fleet (4 Local Police vehicles, six Civil Protection vehicles, one fire brigade, nine works brigade, two electrical brigade and six road vehicles) were 193.38 tons. The total CO2 equivalent tons emitted in 2015 in the municipality are estimated at 62,227.07, with a per capita rate of 2.34 tons per inhabitant. The bulk of the total is due to the consumption of fossil fuels. In the municipality, the municipal, residential, and public and commercial transport sectors were responsible for an energy consumption of 222,321 Mwh ​​that caused these greenhouse gases. Between 2015 and 2019, Cangas has already achieved a reduction in the public sector (public lighting and municipal facilities) of 928 tons of CO2. It went from 1,932 to 1,003, all due to the action plans that the City Council of Cangas has been carrying out for five years, such as the change to led lights in the lighting. The Plan includes, among the measures, programs that cause a change of attitude in the population regarding sustainable energy consumption habits. They will be mitigation or adaptation measures. The first consists of avoiding the increase in polluting emissions and the second, reducing vulnerability to the consequences of climate change. It is intended to carry out an energy audit, hire a person in charge to direct the Plan, energy rehabilitation of municipal buildings, renewal of pumping equipment, renew the mobile park, improve rural infrastructures that avoid depopulation and an emergency plan against droughts, in addition of model villages consisting of the enhancement of farmland at risk of fire.
