The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy adds new support

44 of the 45 municipalities in the province are already attached to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, in which the Provincial Council acts as a territorial coordinator in the province. 40 municipalities that were already included in this protocol have renewed their commitment, while another four have joined for the first time. The municipalities that are part of the Pact are those of Algodonales, Olvera, Prado del Rey and San Martín del Tesorillo.

The Provincial Council, through its area of ​​Ecological Transition Sustainable Urban Development, has been in charge of managing the renewal of the climate commitments acquired by the municipalities of the province, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint, in all cases except in those of Cádiz and Bornos, who have done it by their own means. It is an initiative of the European Commission, launched in 2008, with the aim of encouraging local governments to take part in the fight against climate change and contribute to achieving the objectives of the Union’s climate and energy policy. European.

Initially, the Covenant of Mayors proposed a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2020. The new commitment signed by the municipalities is more ambitious and aims to reduce them in their territory by at least 40% by 2030, in particularly through the improvement of energy efficiency and a greater use of renewable energy sources, and thus favoring adaptation to the repercussions of climate change.

To this end, the municipalities undertake to prepare a reference emissions inventory and an assessment of risks and vulnerabilities derived from climate change, as well as to present an Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy (Paces) within a period of two years from the date of approval of the renovation by the City Council.

The Diputación de Cádiz provides support and assistance to the signatory municipalities through its Energy Agency. In this sense, it is planned to start in 2021 the work of evaluating the climatic risks of the province, basic information for the subsequent preparation of the Paces.
