When UD Almería sold star forward Darwin Núñez to Benfica after suffering a heartbreaking defeat in the Segunda play-offs, the ambitious second division team may have thought their La Liga dreams were over.

But, thanks to the relentless scoring of goals from a single Rangers failure, no one at the Games Stadium is mourning Nunez’s departure for £ 24 million.

With 11 goals in 21 games, 19 in all competitions, Umar Sadiq should comfortably surpass the score set by Núñez in Almería.

The official striker has found a home after a string of short-term loan assignments, including a hugely forgettable mid-season season at Ibrox, best remembered for a desperate push against Aberdeen in a Scottish Cup defeat.

But Sadiq, like Núñez before him, may not stay long, even if Almería corrects last season’s mistakes and secures his place in La Liga at last.

According to El Gol Digital, Europa League champions Sevilla are expected to make an offer for the former Roma youth at the end of the season.

In 2018, when asked what a young Sadiq needed to improve to make his way to Rangers XI, Gerrard was unequivocal in his answer.

“Everything,” he said.

With 29 goals to his name since the start of last season, it’s fair to say that Sadiq has done what Gerrard asked of him, even if it was from Ibrox.
