Dimitar Berbatov believes Liverpool deserves more respect in the Premier League title.

The former Manchester United striker said the fight between the Reds and Manchester City was a "nightmare scenario" for United fans.

Jürgen Klopp's side scored three points at the top of the Domesitc table on Saturday with a 3-0 win against Bournemouth. However, on Sunday they were thrown back by Pep Guardiola's men as they dominated Chelsea in Etihad.

The two teams tie, but Liverpool have a game in hand, though the Reds may have been clear without two consecutive draws against Leicester City and West Ham.

In the two previous results, Liverpool players and Klopp asked how they could handle pressure – a question that was quickly pushed aside with their last win over the cherries.

Berbatov, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester United in 2009 and 2011, told Betfair: "People have to pay a little respect to Liverpool – they play good football, have great coaches and great players.

"They are still fighting.

"If you play for Liverpool, you have to be good and know how to deal with pressure, which will be necessary because it looks like a tough season that could easily go into the final.

"It's good for us to watch from the side, but I was there and it's nerve-wracking for the fans, players and staff of the clubs involved.

"Both Liverpool and City would like to be champions for a long time, but I do not see it when one of them – and of course the Spurs – explodes.

"Winning the title for Liverpool or City is the nightmare scenario for all United fans, and I can not say which of them I would prefer to win!

"If the season ends as a champion, it will be uncomfortable for the fans of Manchester United, which is another reason why I will support Spurs in the title fight.

"But the reality is that both City and Liverpool are playing great football, and that's something you have to respect, and until this time of the season, it's the two teams that deserve to win the league."
