A senior police officer is detained for allegedly having sex with another officer and victim of domestic violence during his service.

The chief inspector, who was not named, worked for the Sussex police and was charged with gross misconduct.

The Independent Police Department (IOPC) said, "The officer is said to have met with a woman in late 2014 and early 2016 who he knew was a former victim of domestic violence while on duty.

"In addition, he is said to have met at least once with a police sergeant the following year to engage in sexual activity, while both officers were on duty."

The watchdog said the two policemen allegedly met for a meeting during working hours and repeatedly used the Sussex Police communication systems to exchange messages "where there was no purpose".

The sergeant is also accused of having unlawfully contacted a witness of the IOPC investigation and being unreachable after a fatal car accident – even though she was on duty.

Both police officers were referred to the IOPC by the Sussex police in March 2017.
