NORFOLK, VA. (WAVY) – The Norfolk Sheriff's office warns residents against a new call fraud in which the caller fakes NSO staff.

The sheriff bureau's warning comes after a reported incident in which a local resident received a phone call on 9 August calling him the "Sex Offenders Registry of the Sheriff of Norfolk Department".

According to reports, the scammer told the caller that arrest warrants had been issued against him. In order to lift the arrest, the person must pay a security deposit of $ 1,000 to the prison.

The sheriff's office said in a statement, "We do not maintain a registry for sex offenders. Most importantly, we would never ask for a cash payment over the phone. "
