ALTON, N.H. (CBS) – A Massachusetts hiker was seriously injured during a fall on Mount Major, New Hampshire.
Matthew McGaunn, 19, of Topsfield, was in a group of UMass Lowell's outdoor adventure program on Saturday, when he lost traction on a steep and icy section of a trail below the summit. He slipped off about 200 meters from the track and suffered a serious head injury.
Firefighters and conservation officials put him in a rescue sledge, but due to the dangerous conditions, they took several hours to leave the mountain.
McGaunn was brought to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, Hew Hampshire. There is no word yet about his condition.
On their way up the mountain to rescue McGaunn, the investigators say they have found another injured Massachusetts hiker. Even Emily Field, 26, from Medford, slipped and fell on the icy path. New Hampshire Fish and Game said that her injury was "not life-threatening" and she could be self-medicated.
