WASHINGTON – Current and former Trump administration officials have privately communicated with Joe Biden’s transition teams even as the president continues to reject defeat and falsely claim victory, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Two Biden transition officials told NBC News on Wednesday that they were just a few current and former Trump administration officials and that it was described as “nothing major.” However, it suggests that there are people in the president’s orbit who believe Biden will be the next president even if Trump refuses to budge and his legal team mounts meritless lawsuits to challenge the results in various states.
The story was reported for the first time on CNN.
Officials emphasized that the approach is in no way a replacement for the national security and COVID-19 briefings that the Trump administration refuses to provide to Biden’s teams.
Trump’s refusal to relent has delayed the General Services Administration from certifying Biden’s transition, creating a delay that has prevented Biden’s team from beginning the orderly process of taking over the expansive catacombs of the federal bureaucracy.
Kate Bedingfield, a spokeswoman for Biden’s transition team, told NBC News in a statement Wednesday that despite the scope, the GSA still needs to certify the transition.
