The so-called Islamic State emerged in 2006 through the merger of various terrorist groups. Until 2013, ISIS was one of the main Sunni armed groups, with at least 4,000 members.
In 2014 the group launched a large-scale offensive in northern and western Iraq and reached its greatest strength during operations in Syria, where it was fighting government forces.
At the end of 2017 it was announced that the terrorist organization was defeated in Syria and Iraq, although to date the elimination of dispersed cells in certain regions continues.
