The fifteen Turkish sailors kidnapped at the end of last month by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea have returned safely to their country, as reported this Sunday by the Turkish Government.
Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu went to Istanbul airport early this Sunday to meet with the crew, released on Friday.
Pirates attacked the ship on January 23, some 180 nautical miles off the Nigerian coast. A member of the crew, an Azeri national, was killed in the assault. Three crew members who survived the attack ended up taking the freighter to a port in Gabon.
The ship was heading from the Nigerian city of Lagos to Cape Town in South Africa when the assault occurred. The pirates came into contact five days after the attack, according to the ship’s company. It was unclear whether a ransom had been paid.
