TV review: Talking Heads; Staged; Welcome to Chechnya: The Gay Purge; The Hidden Wilds of the Highway | Culture

We went back to Talking heads this week and this time it’s Jodie Comer’s turn. Did Lesley, the actress with intoxicating aspirations who ends up taking her ass off the bikini on the set of a German soft porn movie. I’m not sure I like the person I become when I watch these monologues: not now, not even when they were first broadcast in the 1980s.

It always seemed to us that we were repeatedly invited by Alan Bennett to look down on poor, stupid women who were too untalented to support themselves or too cowardly to escape terrible marriages – it’s not exactly a brilliant feminist experience.

None of them felt poorer and more stupid than Lesley; almost all of Bennett’s available disgust
