UEFA will launch a four-part documentary series on Champions League referees, tracking 16 officials from 11 countries, between February 2019 and August 2020.

Produced by UEFA’s digital video platform and titled ‘Man in the Middle’, the series will premiere on 16 November and aims, according to UEFA, to provide football fans “an unprecedented vision of one of the most difficult jobs in the world” and “showing the pressures that referees face”.

The documentary includes footage of exchanges of views between referees and players on the field of play and personal interviews in which they discuss the difficulties of combining a job such as high-level refereeing with family commitments outside of it.

“This is a very important documentary for UEFA and our family of referees. It highlights the professional rigor, motivation and dedication of some of the best referees in Europe, as well as showing the human side behind the figures who watch the players and fans on the pitch “, said UEFA’s chief referee, Roberto Rosetti.

The introduction of VAR and the COVID-19 pandemic have brought new challenges for our referee community, but we are extremely proud of how they have adapted and continued to set the standards for soccer referees around the world.
