PlayStation's Death Stranding debut in # 2 boxed charts in the UK.
It is the second largest exclusive and second largest new IP released this year after another exclusive PS4 release – Days Gone, which was released in April. By comparison, Hideo Kojima's new title sold 36% fewer units at launch.
It's the first new game by Kojima since the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain that appeared in September 2015 and was the most successful release by Metal Gear Solid.
This means that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare occupies number 1 for the third consecutive year. The Activision game continues to perform very well, with sales up 26% from last year's Black Ops 4.
The arrival of Death Stranding means that Luigi's Mansion 3 drops the charts. Nintendo's latest switch game falls from # 2 to # 4, with week-to-week sales dropping by 59%.
There are a number of new releases this week, with EA's Need for Speed: Heat finishing in 5th place. The Need for Speed franchise has struggled in recent years and this new title sold 41% fewer boxed units at launch than the 2017 franchise Need for Speed: Payback. Note: Digital sales are not included in this data.
Need for Speed is one of three EA games in the charts. Places vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville in 10th place. The match posted a 10% increase in sales this week, which means the fourth week of sales was larger than the first week (a rare performance in the UK) physical charts). The shooter was also a big hit as a download and sold far more digitally than physically.
Back to the new releases, a special Fortnite package released by Warner Brodlands at # 7. Meanwhile, Mario & Sonic debuted at number eight at the Tokyo Olympics. It's the most successful Mario & Sonic title since London Games 2012, which were released in 2011 on Nintendo Wii.
Speaking of Nintendo Wii, there is a new Wii title in the charts this week – Just Dance 2020 ranked 15th. Incredibly, the Wii version is the second most successful version of the game and accounts for 21% of all Just Dance 2020 sales. The Nintendo Switch Edition accounted for 55% of sales, the PS4 SKU 14% and Xbox One 10%.
The latest Ubisoft dance game debuts just one place ahead of another new release – Jumanji: The Video Game. The Movie Tie-In was released by Outright Games and appears in 16th place.
Finally, the release of Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Plot means the game returns to # 29 on the charts. The Mystery Adventure was first released in October 2017 on Nintendo 3DS.
