Sunsets or sunrises. Moments of calm, where good music plays, the landscape becomes the perfect scenery, and romance is reborn, even once a year impacted by the quasi-mandatory date to do something as a couple (or alone … why not?).
There are ideal sites for themselves, and others for what they represent: some because they are idyllic and others because their special corners make them unique. Travel to celebrate, or manage to seek inspiration and reproduce at home something of what is perceived from these paradises.
A magical city
When you know her from the inside Venice is much more than the pigeon-crowded square, the Bridge of Sighs that leaves you without a crowded air for photos or the Rialto of everyday shopping. Within minutes of arrival by plane or train, you can cross the lagoon in The Serenissima in a water taxi (or by vaporetto, one as romantic as the other), which you leave at the entrance of the hotel. It is a dramatic and romantic entrance to a magical city. Three jewels invite you to experience the city in all its splendor: the Danieli, Gritti Palace or the Cipriani hotels.
A first tour requires knowing the Doge’s Palace and the islands of Murano (a jewel of blown glass, perhaps) and Burano (for pieces of lace resolved by hand). Lunch at the Locanda Cipriani restaurant on the island of Torcello, where, in addition, there is the armchair of Atila, the Hun, where, according to tradition, those who feel married come back.
But, beyond the particular beauty, the best plan is to get lost in its streets, cross bridges, discover hidden gems.
For those who dare, a function in Unforgettable La Fenice. A moonlit stroll through Piazza San Marco, when the daytime tourists have already left, leaves space for only a few. Dining by candlelight at Il Ridotto, awarded with a Michelin star, can be a good plan.
Enjoy the night view in Shangai from an outdoor terrace high up on the Bund is one of the most romantic settings in the world. The Fairmont Peace Hotel is the perfect place to experience it. The hotel is an art deco glory located near the Nanjing Road shopping mecca. Their Jazz Bar is a great place to go out at night. You can also opt for an intimate four-course dinner on the Cathay Room’s private terrace. Or Fu 1088, housed in a 1930s Spanish-style mansion in the Jing’An district.
You can start the day with morning Tai Chi while watching the sunrise over the river. Later, It would be interesting to take a walk through the Yuyuan Gardens in the center of the Old City and stop at their tea house, a charming and romantic place where you can see the tea plants blooming in glass teapots. Later you can visit a tea market looking for rare leaves of its white version; or stop by the fantastic Gothic Villa Moller, which looks like a fairytale castle.
To have a view from the other side of the river, you can take a ferry to the Pudong Bund and have a drink there at the Grand Hyatt hotel in the famous Jin Mao Tower; its Cloud 9 bar offers an impressive panorama.
There are an overwhelming number of options for romantic places in Hawaii. The Four Seasons Maui in Wailea is spectacularly located, the service is impeccable, and there are so many dining options that you don’t have to go out if you don’t want to. An appropriate alternative for the occasion is that the hotel can arrange for a chef to prepare a 5-course meal at a private table on the beach, decorated with glass, silver, porcelain and tropical flowers.
During the day, you can book a private car with driver and explore the Road to Hana (It is not recommended to go on your own. It is a challenging road). The journey is full of hideouts and secret beaches. The next day, you can charter a fully staffed yacht and watch whales and snorkel in private, or take a surf lesson. Visiting the lavender farm or horse riding are two other possibilities. The must-see: try a different flavor of granita every day.
Seasoned with spices
The fourth largest city in Morocco is located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Known as the “Jewel of the South”, Marrakesh offers a wide range of wonders, from the narrow labyrinthine passages and souks of the old medina, complete with Berber rugs, among many other items, to the modern boulevards of the Gueliz district. There are museums, galleries and gardens to explore, as well as Jemaa-al-Fana, one of the best-known squares in Africa.
The city is home to several beautiful historical mosques, such as the medieval Koutoubia, Ben Yousaf and Mouassine. Other tourist attractions are the Tombs of Saadain, the Tomb of the Seven Saints, the El Badi Palace and the Royal Palace.
One of the most special and must-see places is the Jardin Majorelle. For fashionistas, a walk through the Yves Saint Laurent Museum is also ideal.
After exploring the city, you can take a desert tour at Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi. An alternative is to sleep in a private tent and enjoy camel rides, sand boarding, trekking, quad biking, desert rides and star gazing. (the sunsets over the dunes are impressive).
With good dishes
The city with the most Michelin stars per capita in the world is San Sebastián, on the north coast of Spain. A mecca for foodies and a good place for romance. The Hotel Maria Cristina is perfectly located, overlooking the river and a lovely garden right next to it. On Valentine’s Day, the visitor will be greeted at check-in with a bottle of cava and a bowl of fresh cherries. The hotel’s exclusive “Pintxo Passport” is a tasting tour of 6 different pintxo bars, which concludes with a refined cocktail at the DRY San Sebastián bar.
A walk along the Playa de la Concha and through the old town, it is the inevitable step. And then visit the Txepetxa Bar, known for its award-winning anchovies; Bar Bergara, where the pintxos are like mini works of art; or Zuberoa, a restaurant with two Michelin stars in a 14th-century country house in nearby Iturriotz.
Queen Victoria said she “never saw a more charming or romantic place” than Inverlochy Castle in Fort William, Highlands, Scotland. Situated in a valley surrounded by highland peaks, this historic hotel is one of the best in the region. The drive through Glencoe and Great Glen is beautiful. The hotel’s Rolls Royce is available
The classic country house style – silk and brocade, glass, polished wood, French Empire ceiling frescoes – will all make it feel like Downtown Abbey. The castle has only 17 rooms, including three suites, all decorated in a traditional way. Dinner begins with a drink by the fire in the Great Room, followed by a five-course menu; the sommelier is highly qualified and will match the wines with presentation. There is also an afternoon tea so magical that it is inevitable.
In Heidi’s lands
One of the most iconic ski resorts in the Alps, Zermatt is a perfect destination for a romantic getaway in the snow. The ski area offers slopes on three terrains for skiing, but also for snowboarders and freestylers, who will love the Snowpark Zermatt, where Olympic players train. An ideal adventure is to cross to the Italian ski region of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche, or to try paragliding or heli-skiing off-piste.
The perfect visit invites you to discover the Hotel Cervo, with six chalets, each with 5 or 6 rooms. The accommodations are charming and have spectacular views of the Matterhorn. Breakfast on the terrace is a special treat, it comes with a coat. It is ideally located for easy access to the slopes and also to the city. The après ski party is lively and fun, and the hotel’s burger with truffle fries is worth the entire trip.
A bite of apple
The glow of Manhattan never goes out of style and there is no bad time to visit. In February, the Four Seasons Downtown awaits footsteps from the feverish world of Wall Street. Instead, Mandarin Oriental stands in front of Central Park. How to resist its charms?
Putting together a tour in this city is almost impossible. There is so much to do! A good option may be to get lost being inspired by the art of one of the great museums: the MoMA, the Met or the Whitney. Ice skating at Rockefeller Center, Central Park or Bryant Park.
In the evening, enjoy an old-school French dinner at the stunningly beautiful and flower-filled La Grenouille in the city center; or take a getaway to Harlem for jazz at posh Minton’s, or to Brooklyn for a romantic meal at the charming River Café. A show at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, or on Broadway is extremely New York inspiration. To finish: a drink at the Standard Hotel on the High Line.
The luxurious Aman Resorts has three hotels andn Bali. For romance, my recommendation is the Amankila, located in an exclusive and secluded part of Bali: Manggis, on the east side of the island. The complex’s three tiered pools have become a famous icon of Balinese luxury – the view from the hotel lobby towards the pools and the sea is breathtaking.
The complex has only 34 suites, so it offers maximum tranquility and privacy (1 is the largest and most luxurious). A snorkeling excursion, surfing on a private beach or spending time at the spa… or just going unnoticed among celebrities.
We will always have …
It may be obvious, but Paris will always be a party for any lover. Two favorite accommodations if we go for the magnificent: the Four Seasons George V and Le Bristol. Both are immaculately decorated, very well run, and wonderfully romantic.
Hugged and in good coats, the paths of the Luxembourg Gardens, the Place de Vosges, the cobbled streets of the Marais or the Tuileries await. The Louvre, the Musée de l’Orangerie, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Rodin or the splendid Jacquemart-Andre house museum … and we can continue to fill ourselves with art.
For a day of love you can start with a lunch at Café Marly and, later, at any pastry shop on the way to enjoy something sweet with a steaming cup of ¨chaud¨ chocolate. For dinner, expect Epicure, the 3-star Michelin restaurant at Le Bristol or Le Georges, the restaurant at the Center Georges Pompidou. To finish, like in a movie from the golden years, a walk in the moonlight on the Pont des Arts or the Pont Neuf is an eternal way to celebrate a great love.
