Thibaut Courtois said video technology was the right decision after Ajax scored a goal in the Real Madrid Champions League 2-1 win.
VAR excludes a header from Nicolas Tagliafico, apparently because Dusan Tadic was in an offside position and was standing in front of Real's goalkeeper Courtois when the ball came up.
However, Courtois seemed to think that the offense had taken place a few seconds earlier, when Tadic had tilted his leg in front of him and the Belgian goalkeeper had reversed the initial head of Matthijs de Ligt.
"I think it was the right decision, when it happened I thought maybe offside," Courtois told BT Sport.
"It was a mistake on my part, but I went there and caught it. Tadic tried to shoot, but did not hit him, and as he is offside, he is offside.
"Because of his intention, I made a fast movement and the ball bounced off my arm. I had a hapless goal, but when I saw the screen, I saw a possible offside.
"I think it was the right decision and luckily for us there was VAR because otherwise no one would have seen it."
This controversial decision led Real to score half-time with three goals in the second half.
Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio were well targeted for Real, but the defending champions, who were looking for a fourth consecutive title, were threatened by a major scare from the only remaining team in the competition to qualify.
In addition to the goal denied, Tadic hit a post and Ajax fully recognized his tying goal scored by Hakim Ziyech.
Substitute Asensio grabbed the Real winner three minutes from the end.
"I like Ajax a lot," Courtois added. "They pushed us very high, it was hard to find room and keep the ball and they played very well.
"They had opportunities, I made good stops and we were lucky to win the game today.
"We kept control, scored a great goal, they made a good 1-1 and we had another 1-2 and we are very happy with the win."
The boss of Ajax, Erik Ten Hag, was surprised by the decision of the VAR.
"Why was it forbidden? I've heard several reasons, offside, embarrassing the goalkeeper. But I did not see him, "he told De Telegraaf.
"We dominated, forced a lot of chances, but scored too little.
"The real never allows a lot of possibilities. It was perhaps our best game of this season. "
