Verizon Business (Japanese corporation: Verizon Japan GK, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Ryuta Yamazaki, hereinafter referred to as “Verizon”) is today working on the deployment of private 5G at Southampton Port. Announced partnership with ABP). Verizon’s private 5G platform, offered through a partnership with Nokia, provides secure, low-latency private network connectivity at Southampton, one of the busiest ports in the United Kingdom (UK).
ABP operates a network of 21 ports, including Southampton Port. Southampton Port serves as the UK’s premier port, responsible for £ 40 billion of UK exports each year, and plays an important role in the supply chain of the country’s businesses and manufacturers. It is also the UK’s largest port for automobiles and cruises, handling approximately 900,000 vehicles and welcoming millions of cruise passengers annually. With this new agreement, Southampton Port will be the first port in the UK’s Mainland with a private 5G network.
Tami Erwin, CEO of Cellco Partnership, commented:
“Verizon’s Private 5G is a fully specialized foundation for edge computing infrastructure, providing ultra-low latency, higher levels of security in the facility, as well as more in-depth customization for partners. Companies such as ABP are facing pressure to evolve their services at an alarming rate to take advantage of new business opportunities. Verizon, along with Nokia, helps ABP immediately enjoy the benefits of private 5G. And most importantly, prepare the Port of Southampton to take full advantage of new technology applications and real-time analytics to enable the digital transformation of next-generation services. “
Verizon’s private 5G platform provides ABP with a highly reliable and secure private wireless data network across Southampton’s East Dock and specific areas within the West Dock. This consolidates data communications into a single network, reducing traditional complexity while improving the reliability and security of in-port communications.
This private 5G deployment not only solves the pressing problem of loss of onsite data communication caused by poor Wi-Fi connectivity, but also provides superior reliability, throughput, security, and ultra-low latency. Advanced 5G capabilities enable new technologies such as real-time analytics, IoT, and machine learning. It drives advances in new services that are likely to emerge in the near future, including asset tracking, autonomous guided vehicles, workflow management, predictive maintenance, and safety monitoring.
Henrik L. Pedersen, CEO of ABP, said:
“Building a flexible and resilient technology platform to meet the needs of our customers is at the core of our strategy and the first in the UK to offer our customers a private 5G network. Being a port operator is a great milestone for ABP. Thanks to our partners for making this project possible. With this project, Southampton Port will be at the forefront of the digital revolution in the maritime industry. Equipped with the state-of-the-art infrastructure you need.
Verizon announced the International Private 5G Platform in October 2020 for global companies based in Europe and Asia Pacific. Brian Fitzgerald, Senior Vice President of Nokia’s Verizon Business Group, said:
“5G opportunities will become a reality with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with frequencies being released and private 5G networks going live in corporate facilities around the world.
