Visits in Sanlúcar de Guadiana fall due to the closure of Portugal

The mayor of Sanlúcar de Guadiana, José María Gómez, has highlighted the “minor movement” that occurs in this town on the border with Portugal, both due to the regional closure of Andalusia and the restrictions of the neighboring country due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Likewise, he pointed out that the virus and Brexit have caused British residents in the town to have extended their stays due to the current scenario in their country.

Along these lines, the mayor explained that the visits the town receives are mainly on weekends and that, due to the closure of Andalusia, they can only be Andalusian, when normally the movement with Portugal is frequent.

Gómez trusts that with the improvement of the weather, visits will be more encouraged, which tend to be spending the day in the town and eating in an establishment, in addition to enjoying the senderos.

In addition, he recalled that those who go to Sanlúcar del Guadiana cannot go through the river, -as was usual-, to Alcoutim due to restrictions and that it is not allowed to leave or enter Andalusia, except for justified reasons. Specifically, he has referred to the measures established in Andalusia as well as those that have been set in Portugal, where “everything closes at one o’clock”, which makes the environment “off” in the Portuguese country.

Likewise, the mayor recalled that almost a quarter of the population of Sanlúcar del Guadiana corresponds to British residing in the village and that, given the current situation, they have lengthened their stays as not many go in summer or now due to the difficult situation in the United Kingdom. British families are “upset” by the issue of Brexit but above all by Covid-19, as Gómez has indicated.

In the same way, Gómez has referred to the fact that this context has also led to foreign people living on their boats having to extend your period at the local port. The mayor estimates that there may be a hundred who are moored with their boats and make their lives later in the town.

Finally, he remarked that the town is practically free of Covid since there have hardly been cases since the beginning of the pandemic (only register three). However, the municipal councilor has stressed the importance of complying with the corresponding regulations to avoid infections.
