Tom Westley led the way with 238 runs as Essex fought a draw against Warwickshire in the Specsavers County Championship Division One at Edgbaston.

After Essex 324, 193 lag behind, he followed and finished the last day with 158 in pairs, as the competition in the sunshine of Birmingham expired.

Westley added a second inning 97 to his first inning 141 when he and Alastair Cook (57 not out) added 157 in 54 overs to bring their side to safety.

The draw secured Warwickshire the status of Division One and condemned Nottinghamshire for relegation, however, meant that Essex gave the initiative in the race for the title to Somerset.

In the second division, Sussex won eight goals against Gloucestershire to increase hopes of another rise.

Phil Salt and Stiaan Van Zyl scored an uninterrupted third wicket score of 41 as Sussex successfully pursued a modest 74 goal victory with 52 Overs.

Northamptonshire also has a promotion in sight after scoring seven goals on Leicestershire on Grace Road.

Former skipper Alex Wakely was unbeaten with 141 goals as his team took second place.
