WESD COVID Updates 2020 – 2021 / COVID Updates

November 13, 2020

Dear WESD Families and Staff,

Once again, I want to express my appreciation for your patience and support during these unprecedented times. None of us has ever lived through a health crisis such as this, yet everyone is committed to putting in extra effort to ensure that our students and families have what they need. I am truly grateful.

This communication contains the following information:

  • County Metrics for November 12 and Possible Change in Learning Model;
  • COVID-19 Dashboard;
  • COVID 19 Parent Hotline and Email; and
  • Grab and Go Daily Meal Program – No Service Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27.

County Metrics for November 12, Possible Change in Learning Model

While the metrics released yesterday by Maricopa County (at the end of this letter) indicate the WESD should remain in the Hybrid Learning Model, it is important to note that the first indicator – number of cases per 100,000 – has moved to the red. Additionally, the percent positivity has substantially increased in our community.

As we’ve stated since the beginning, the WESD will use the benchmarks and the guidance from our state and local health officials, the Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction to determine the appropriate learning model for our students. If the WESD does not see a substantial decrease in benchmarks, students in the Hybrid A/B Learning Model will return to Online Distance Learning five days a week beginning Monday, November 23.   It is important that families and staff begin preparing for this.

The increase in COVID in our community is concerning. I implore you to do your part to help us reduce the spread:

  • Monitor your children’s health before sending them to school.
  • If your children are sick, please keep them at home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Keep your distance; do not congregate in large groups.
  • Limit social interactions with people outside of your household.
  • Wash your hands often and keep your hands away from your face.
  • Frequently disinfect high-touch areas.

New COVID-19 Dashboard

Current, active cases are posted on our COVID-19 dashboard. This dashboard is intended to provide WESD families, staff and community members a summary of positive COVID-19 cases by school/location. Cases recorded on the dashboard indicate the current number of individuals (students and staff) on campus who have tested positive for COVID-19. Once an individual is cleared to return, the case will be removed from the dashboard. The dashboard will be updated on a weekly basis.

COVID-19 Parent Hotline and Email

If you have questions about COVID-19, Maricopa County Department of Public Health has created an email and call line for parents. Parents can email COVIDparenthotline@Maricopa.gov or call 2-1-1 then press Option 6 for COVID-19 and then Option 3 to connect to a hotline staff member.

Daily Grab and Go Program – No Service November 26 and 27 – Thanksgiving Holiday

Grab and Go is available curbside Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for hybrid students who aren’t on campus for instruction that day, online distance learners, younger or older siblings, and non-WESD students.  Meals continue to be offered for free for all children age 18 and younger.  Parents/guardians can pick up meals for children at any Grab and Go location.  There will be no service Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday; however, four additional breakfasts and lunches will be distributed Wednesday, November 25 to assist families during the break.

For more information or special dietary needs, contact Nicole Augustine at 602-896-5240 or Nicole.Augustine@wesdschools.org.

The next few weeks will be challenging for all of us. By working together, we can do our part to reduce the spread of COVID. Please don’t hesitate to email wesdcommserv@wesdschools.org or call 602-347-2657 if you have any questions.  Please stay informed by visiting our WESD COVID Updates page at www.wesdschools.org/covidupdates.
