Since 1972, every October 18 the World Day for the Protection of Nature with the main objective of anticipating risks and preventing damage; protect those natural spaces that have vegetation, fauna, landscape or geomorphology.

But it all started in a letter from the former president Juan Domingo Perón on March 16, 1972 while in exile in Madrid, and that they were sent to Kurt Waldheim, then Secretary General of the United Nations.

In this message, Perón warned about “the suicide march that humanity has undertaken through the pollution and the biosphere, the waste of natural resources, the unbridled growth of the population and the overestimation of technology. “Waldheim would have defined October 18 as the World Day for the Protection of Nature with the aim of making the population aware of the damage to the environment, educate, prevent and eradicate acts that harm it.

To achieve the main objective of caring for nature, it is essential to promote environmental education based on values applicable to any social attitude and whose objective is to form the capacity to critical observation and value judgment taking into account the protection and sustainable management of our environment.

The United Nations, in its 2030 Agenda, offers some ideas of an integrated and indivisible nature that involve the economic, social and environmental spheres. Regarding this last item, the agency recommends:

  • Use renewable energy sources.
  • Recycle and reuse plastic and all waste material with which new products can be created.
  • Maintain your car regularly or change it to one that uses biofuels or solar electric power.
  • Build urban planning with green roofs.
  • Generate organic compost in our homes to reduce garbage in cities.
  • Bring ecological shopping bags.
  • Reduce our carbon footprint.
