England has qualified ahead of schedule for the last 16 teams at the FIFA World Cup in France. Jodie Taylor (61) shot her national team to a 1-0 win against outsiders Argentina. England lead Group C with six points and can no longer be overtaken by the third-placed South Americans (1). In the last group match against the Second Japan it is for England for the group victory (19 June, 21 clock live ticker on SPIEGEL ONLINE).
As with the surprising 0: 0 in the opening game against Japan, Argentina chose a very defensive tactic. The 37th in the world ranking left England from the beginning of the game. The Three Lionesses tried to pull the opposing ranks apart and enter the penalty area via the wings. For the first time succeeded when Lucy Bronze with a cross from the right side Jill Scott served (13), whose header goalkeeper Vanina Correa but held on.
Correa parried a penalty
Fifteen minutes later, it was really explosive: Alex Greenwood dribbled the ball through the Argentine penalty area and was rewrinkled by Ruth Bravo (28). Referee Qin Liang correctly awarded a penalty. Nikita Parris came in, but Correa parried the half-high shot into the right corner with one hand. Argentina did not get a dangerous chance. But the Europeans had the chance to lead again shortly before the break. But Beth Mead failed freestanding at the again outstanding parry Correa (41).
The second half began as the first had ended: with a Correa parade. After a free kick Parris came in the penalty area to a conclusion by Dropkick, but the Correa fought off (53). A header from Taylor from close range held the goalkeeper (56.). But then it happened: Bethany Mead was released in the left of the penalty area and served Taylor in the center, which inserted from short distance to the lead (61.). After that, England continued to dominate with more possession and more accurate passing. England came up with 19 shots at the end, Argentina only three.
In the second group match of the day, Japan beat Scotland 2-1. While England are in the third game (19 June) for the group win, Argentina plays against Scotland for third place, which could still be enough to reach the knockout stage.
