Developer Blizzard adds a new feature to its chat filtering system to help combat toxicity and racism in the popular MMO World of Warcraft.
World of warcraft It is one of the largest and longest running games in the industry. Now, developer Blizzard has updated World of warcraftThe profanity filter to be a bit more aggressive.
For those who do not know World of warcraft is a fantasy MMO that sees thousands of players on each server at the same time. World of warcraft it remains one of the largest MMOs in the industry, despite its release in 2004. Prior to this update, messages sent by players to global chat or private messages with profanity, words were censored with asterisks or simply had the word completely redacted.
World of warcraftThe new chat filter will now completely block private messages that violate the policy from being sent. Rather than just censoring words, players who send messages with banned words will have the entire message blocked and will receive a message that says “Cannot send chat to ‘username’ because your message contains reserved words”. The change comes as part of Blizzard’s latest efforts to combat toxicity, racism and the afflicted in World of warcraft. However, it has not yet been clarified which words are included in the new reserved word list, but it has been confirmed that the list is primarily focused on racial slurs for now.
The system is still in its early stages of implementation and is undergoing extensive testing. For now, the new filter is only in place on World of warcraftMessages sent on the client. This means that players can still send messages containing racial slurs when they send messages through Blizzard’s cross-title messaging service, Whispers. It is likely that once the system undergoes further testing, the list of blocked words will grow to combat more toxicity, and gamers are also likely to see the system begin to roll out alongside other efforts to curb toxicity in Snow stormother great titles like Supervision Y Diablo.
For now, the new system seems like a step in the right direction. Toxicity is a big problem in multiplayer games, and it’s good to see Blizzard step in and work to address the problem in one of their biggest titles. It will be interesting to see to what extent Blizzard develops the system and what other changes or new additions World of warcraft they have in mind to help make it a better place for players. Hopefully, the company’s efforts will be effective in helping to make World of warcraft be a more welcoming place for everyone.
World of warcraft is now available on PC.
