Will Barcelona have patience with Koeman to continue as their DT?

Ronald Koeman overcame his first 100 days as Barcelona coach installed on a roller coaster of results and sensations that one week he rises as the leader of a transition between the past and the future and the next he is pointed out as incapable of directing that change of cycle that is guessed at the Camp Nou.

At the gates of the most momentous elections in the modern history of the Barça club, the figure of the Dutch coach remains almost untouchable in the mouths of the presidential hopefuls. Only Víctor Font, who months ago introduced Xavi Hernández as the coach of his project, dared at one point to affirm that Koeman would have no future at the club if he won the elections for more titles than the team won this season. A statement that he rectified in view of the contrary reactions it provoked.

From Joan Laporta, the last to appear and catapulted into the role of favorite, and to Jordi Farré, the promoter of the vote of no confidence that ended Bartomeu, all the candidates have rushed to show their absolute respect for the immaculate figure that represents a coach which is a legend among Barça fans. Toni Freixa, Xavi Vilajoana, Lluís Fernández Alà, Pere Riera, Agustí Benedito and Emili Rosaud have taken for granted that Ronald Koeman is “my coach” transferring an undeniable confidence to him … All, obviously, waiting to know what the result will be end of the season.

Nobody dares to question the Wembley hero just like that, and less publicly, a guy who in 1992 entered the history of Barça through the big door and who, as a transcendental footballer of the Dream Team, is considered one of the most esteemed characters among the club’s fans, even if the results, and the game, of the team he directs are not optimal as everyone would like.

“I can only work because it is not in my power to influence the elections,” explained Koeman on more than one occasion, who in August left the comfort of his job as head of the Netherlands national team to take the bench of a burning Barça, jumping into the void after the worst result in its history in the Champions League and tasked with resuscitating a team that collapsed in every way.

From here it is worth asking, without any certainty as to the answer, what is the intimate opinion of the candidates for the presidency of the club regarding him. And it is that, above supporting phrases, each and every one of the presidential candidates has a sports plan in which, it is known, they have explored the option of a new coach.

With two defeats in thirteen official matches, the qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League heading with an, until today, immaculate group stage but an irregular and even disappointing league campaign, Koeman’s Barça is going to the limit of the requirement.

A man of clear and direct speech, of firm decisions regardless of whether they are more or less accepted by the polluted and always controversial environment of Barcelona, the Dutchman does not seem to care about the reactions that these sports decisions provoke at a time when the club is so pending of the offices as of the playing field.

In any other club, caught in an institutional and economic crisis of unknown dimensions, his figure, for what he represents, would be indisputable. In Barcelona, however, everything is different. And no one knows, no matter how suspicious, what plans and patience the new president may have with him. No matter how Ronald Koeman is called.

Gary Lineker turns 60: He coined what is probably the most famous sentence about German football

WIt was a few days ago that you could see for yourself how well, how professionally he acts – without the ball on your foot. On Wednesday night, Gary Lineker was sitting in a television studio. The news of the death of Diego Armando Maradona, the Argentine football legend, had also reached him, the former English star striker. When asked about Maradona, Lineker began to speak highly of him. He told us what a brilliant football player Maradona was and said, full of admiration, how he handled the ball.

Around 7.7 million followers on Twitter

Lineker said, for example, how he once observed Maradona when the latter, not moving much, shot the ball up 13 times in a row and got it back on his foot. Anyone else, Lineker said, would do it three or four times. As resolute as the former striker was once on the pitch, he is eloquent today. You like to listen to him, you like to read what he has to say.

Lineker hosts two of the most popular sports shows on British television and has 7.7 million followers on Twitter. Recently he has even been discussed as the new head of the English Football Association. But the ex-national player and TV presenter has absolutely no interest in that. Lineker said he was “not a good organizer”. And he could hardly imagine that “an old white man like me” would have a chance at the job. The former striker turns 60 this Monday.

His hair has long been gray, but the twice divorced Lineker, who has four sons from his first marriage, looks significantly younger. “I’m still in good shape,” he recently told the Guardian newspaper. “70 is the number I’m worried about. I would like to work ten more years in my job and have a good time. “

Lineker, who hunted goals as a professional for Leicester City, Everton FC, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur, is omnipresent for English football fans. He moderates the program “Match Of The Day”, the English equivalent of “Sportschau”, on the BBC broadcaster, and regularly presents the Champions League on the pay-TV channel BT Sport.

Not a single yellow card in his career

He also posts on Twitter several times a day – sometimes ten to 20 times during a thrilling soccer game. Most recently about the video evidence that changed the sport, but not for the better. His fans appreciate the clear words – Lineker criticizes footballers, coaches, officials and rules objectively but bluntly. He remains fair as a player. It’s hard to believe: in the 16 years of his playing career, he hasn’t received a single yellow or red card. In 1990 he received the Fifa Fair Play Award.

Lineker’s followers also love his humor. “Now we know why Messi wanted to leave,” he tweeted when his ex-club Barça recently presented new jerseys in pink that took getting used to. When the Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic became infected with the coronavirus, Lineker quipped: “My thoughts are with the virus at this difficult time.”

The 80-time national player often changes his famous sentence about German football. When Germany failed in the Nations League in 2018, he joked with self-irony: “Whoever said that football is a game in which 22 players kick the ball for 90 minutes and in the end the Germans always win, has no idea and should get down. “

Lineker does not hold back with political views either. He spoke out clearly against Brexit, at least until the end of 2019. “After the last parliamentary election, I stopped,” he emphasized in the “Times” interview. “I said at the time: Now everyone knows my point of view and I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” Apparently, some Brexit supporters still resent him. He even said he was attacked on the street because of it.

Lineker also campaigns against racism and campaigns for the support of refugees. “It’s not political for me. It’s humanitarian, ”he says. He is not afraid to offend or polarize. On the contrary. “I’m enjoying it,” he told the Telegraph. “They call me a leftist, a socialist celebrity, but I’m actually pretty much in the middle.”

With a view to the Corona crisis, Lineker made players, clubs and associations responsible – not a political consideration for him. “It’s not a question of Tory, Liberals, Labor, Brexit or where to stay,” he clarified. “It’s all about minimizing the number of deaths.” Shortly afterwards, he was spotted in a supermarket without a mask.

Koeman assures that “now” is the moment for Barcelona to react and shorten distances

BARCELONA – Ronald Koeman, Barcelona coach, was clear and direct in his speech when referring to this Sunday’s game against Osasuna. “We need the three points. Due to our trajectory in the League we need to win,” revealed the Dutch coach, who confirmed that if there is a moment to react “it is now. We have seven games until the end of the year, five of them at home, and it’s time to close the gap. “

After their absence in Kiev, Messi and De Jong, said the Barça coach, will return to the team, highlighting that both “have had a good rest because they had played almost everything, both at Barça and in their national team, and for we decided to leave them at home. Hopefully tomorrow, with freshness, they can offer the best of them because we need them “, admitting that Sergiño Dest’s presence is very much in the air.

“He noticed some discomfort but today he trained better … He is on the list and we will see tomorrow if he is fit to play,” said Koeman, noting that in case of not being able to count on the full-back, he has an idea of his change. ” We know who can play in that position but it is something that we will decide tomorrow if Dest cannot be ”, he advanced, confirming that Mingueza“ has a lot of chances to be in the team ”.

The doubt of Dest joins the problems, “bad luck” said the coach, who have hit the squad in the form of injuries during this start of the season. “We have out Piqué, Ansu, also Sergi Roberto … We have had bad luck with the issue of injuries and hopefully from now on we will not have more problems of this type. The issue of Covid influences injuries, we need more players and you also have to have more luck ”.

“The Kiev match is the best a coach can see because the team’s performance against the Dynamo was very good,” Koeman summed up to show his satisfaction with the “rhythm” of the players, acknowledging not knowing “why” the results They are so different between the League and the Champions League.

“It is not easy to explain why. Sometimes you get games in which you dominate more, but in the League it has cost us with teams that play more closed in defense and in the Champions League somewhat more open. At the end of the season we will be able to decide what to do for us I think that in the League we did not deserve to lose so many points and in the Champions League, winning Juve gave us confidence and made us come out relaxed in the other games, “he said.

Asked about the corner goal scored in Kiev and the importance of set pieces, Koeman stressed that “we always pay a lot of attention to set pieces, both in defense and in attack. But we don’t have very tall players and it is difficult to score because the opponent is better than us from above. In corners we try more to play short to surprise the opponent, who is usually taller than us, “he recalled.

“I do not want to put notes on myself of these 100 days. It is true that I have had 100 days calmer in other clubs, but I know that I have come to Barça at a difficult time,” he agreed when referring to his first 100 days as coach of Barça who met Koeman on Friday, who left “that note for you (journalists). I put my energy in the team, in the young people who can get ahead and focus on this calendar, “he said.

The Barça coach did not want to talk about the January market but he did warn that the club’s situation “is difficult” and acknowledged having “spoken with Tusquets for the love of the club and what we are experiencing. If I can help Barcelona I am willing ( in reference to his salary cut) And it is also good news that the players have lowered their salary because it is time to see what is best for the club. “

Regarding the possibility of speaking with the candidates of the January market, as the president of the management committee suggested, Koeman was not very explicit: “We will speak if it is decided like this and if they ask me about the staff we will tell them our thoughts to move it forward” , summarized.

Barcelona returns to LaLiga hell, with many pending, but with the return of Messi and De Jong

BARCELONA – Barcelona, once the echoes of its exhibition in Kiev have been turned off, returns this Sunday to its sad and urgent reality of LaLiga, receiving an Osasuna against whom there is no other answer than victory to maintain a certain option to re-engage with the title fight, having lost more points than he won in his first eight rounds, which marks his worst start to the championship since 1991.

With the returns of Lionel Messi and Frenkie de Jong, absent for rest in the Champions League, the recovery of Busquets, the doubt of Sergiño Dest, who with discomfort will not know until hours before the game if he can enter the eleven, and the well-known absences by Injury to Piqué, Araujo, Sergi Roberto and Ansu Fati The victory, at any price, is understood to be essential against an opponent who only won in six of their 38 previous visits to the Camp Nou … Although one of them was in the last, in the sad farewell to the League last year and that puts the Barça team on guard.

Ronald Koeman’s phrase that the League “is very long” could be counterprogrammed another by Johan Cruyff who in his time recalled that the title “is not won at Christmas, but can be lost” to understand the challenge, enormous, which the Barça team is facing at this point, needing to overcome nine points against Atlético de Madrid and which begins on the 12th weekend below Real Sociedad, although in the case of the Basques, leaders, the severity is less considering that they have played two more games.

“We need the three points”, the Barça coach acknowledged in this sense, placing special emphasis on the fact that the immediate calendar of his team has to mark his recovery in a particularly complicated championship from the beginning. A single league victory (against Betis) adds Barça in their last six games, having conceded nine goals to show that defensive strength is still one of their pending issues, as well as finding a substitute goal scorer for Luis Suárez in both the Lionel Messi numbers remain (penalties on the sidelines) very far from normal and, also, he needs to regain his pulse in terms of the game in the center of the field, avoiding that breakdown of the team, between defense and attack, which has so much injured.

The forgotten ones in the FIFA The Best nominations

Alexander-Arnold and Erling Haaland are some of the great absentees in the FIFA The Best awards, who else had arguments to be considered?

The finalists and the finalists for the award The Best of FIFA for the 2019/20 season were announced on Wednesday. While there was no significant surprise on the list of nominees, there are questionable points in the male categories.

For this reason, ESPN.com He listed five names that could be in the dispute for best player and were left out, either for individual performance or also for achievements. Also, three coaches who are out, but who had arguments to be considered.

PLAYERS

Trent Alexander-Arnold

At 22, the right-back has established himself as the best in the world at his position and was one of the most important players for Liverpool to win the Premier League, the club’s first league title in 30 years. He scored four goals and provided 13 assists.

Joshua Kimmich

He is the midfielder for Bayern Munich, a team that dominated Europe and took all the titles the previous season. Author of a great goal that determined the victory of Munich in Dortmund and the direction of the Bundesliga, the midfielder is the one who dictates the rhythm of the team, he has great defensive and offensive importance with his seven goals and 15 assists that prove it. His performance throughout the season was much more consistent and impactful than that of Thiago Alcántara, who is on the top ten list.

Erling Haaland

He did not win titles, but the 20-year-old Norwegian, who debuted in the Champions League as if he has known it for a long time, was not short of goals – he was the competition’s top scorer with ten goals, although he was eliminated in the round of 16. Voted the best under-21 player in Europe, the forward scored 44 goals in 40 games in the season between his games with Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.

Ciro Immobile

Speaking of goals, the Italian did not take the Golden Boot for nothing. The forward won the award after scoring 36 goals in the Italian Championship (not counting nine assists), which were essential for Lazio to qualify for the Champions League after a 13-year absence.

Jordan Henderson

The Liverpool captain was voted the best player of the last Premier League campaign by the English press, although in the players’ vote the winner was Kevin de Bruyne. The midfielder can often be overlooked for not scoring or assisting, but he’s more than just a leader for the Reds. He is a key player in the balance and rhythm of such an intense and well-trained team.

Coaches

Jorge Jesus

Copa Libertadores, Brazilian Championship, Brazilian Super Cup, South American Recopa, Carioca Championship … The Portuguese only did not win the Brazil Cup with Flamengo, we agree that it was not for that reason that he was not on the list of candidates for the award of best coach. In addition to the titles, Jesús was the architect of the team that presented the best football of the decade in Brazil. Not even the distance between South American and European football serves as an excuse for the Portuguese not having been nominated.

Julian Nagelsmann

Finalist in the German Cup, solid campaign in the Bundesliga finishing third and semifinalist in the Champions League in his second participation in history. RB Leipzig’s success in the 2019-20 season is a huge credit to Julian Nagelsmann, who saw his team play well and be very convincing, even as Timo Werner, the great name of the squad, left the club before the end it’s from the season. Even without his star, the coach managed to get his team to eliminate Atlético de Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Gian Piero Gasperini

A few minutes separated Atalanta from being RB Leipzig’s rival in the Champions League semi-final, as PSG scored two goals in the final minutes of the match and ended the Serie A club’s dreams of winning the Champions League. Frustration over the defeat did not diminish the impact that the Bergamo team had on Europe. On the domestic scene, the team finished third in the Italian championship and once again had the best attack in Serie A with 98 goals. A number that draws both the attention and the absence of Gian Piero Gasperini.

FEMALE CATEGORY

Among the nominees, the absence of players from the United States, the last world champions, stands out. LONDON, Nov 26 (Reuters) – Fans of Premier League clubs in London and Liverpool will be able to attend matches when a month-long national lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19 ends on December 2, as both cities qualified Thursday to leave the regions on high alert.

A maximum number of 4,000 spectators will be able to attend elite sporting events in the Stage 1 medium alert zones – the lowest risk – in England, the British government said on Monday.

Although there are no Premier clubs in Stage 1 areas, the Liverpool city region and the 32 London neighborhoods plus the city of London will remain in Stage 2 -high alert- and their clubs will be able to receive up to 2,000 fans .

Arsenal, from the north of the capital, will be the first major club to host 2,000 fans when they face Austrian Rapid Vienna in their Europa League group stage match on 3 December at the Emirates Stadium.

The squad said tickets will be sold on a “first-come, first-served” model to fans who signed up earlier in the season.

Other English regions with clubs in the Premier, such as Brighton and Southampton, may also bring back their fans.

However, Manchester teams will have to wait longer, as Greater Manchester was classified within the very high alert zone on the list. here published by the government on Thursday.

The return of fans after an eight-month absence due to COVID restrictions means that clubs will have to consult local security advisory groups and receive the go-ahead.

Also, teams will need to bring stadium staff back to work for matches, including security guards, who may have been temporarily fired.
