The University of Cambridge officially opened its new £58 million New Whittle Laboratory. The launch, attended by His Majesty King Charles, serves as the site for the Frank Whittle Summit, a gathering of senior government officials, military representatives, and executives from global corporations including Rolls-Royce, Boeing, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Siemens Energy.

The facility is intended to serve as a catalyst for UK industrial growth, specifically targeting the aerospace, energy, and defence sectors. By utilizing artificial intelligence and autonomous laboratory infrastructure, the institution aims to shorten technology development cycles — a process that currently takes years — into timelines measured in weeks or months.

A Mission-Driven Approach

The New Whittle Laboratory integrates two primary functions to facilitate this shift in industrial output:

  • The Bennett Innovation Lab: A mission-focused capability tasked with launching 20 to 30 projects over the coming decade, with each initiative aimed at either building or transforming a specific UK industry.
  • The National Centre for Propulsion and Power: A rapid-testing facility designed to reduce the time required for testing under real-world conditions from years to weeks.

According to Professor Rob Miller, the laboratory’s director and Chair in Aerothermal Technology, the initiative seeks to move beyond incremental improvements in engineering.

"AI is dramatically accelerating hardware innovation across the aerospace, energy and defence sectors. Britain has the capacity and the audacity to compete and win in a global race. What’s missing is a bold new approach that champions rapid iteration over incremental improvement. That’s why we’ve established the Bennett Innovation Lab — a sovereign capability designed to launch transformative new missions, each of which is designed to build or transform a UK industry."

Industrial and Economic Goals

The strategy at the laboratory involves deploying small, elite engineering teams that operate using Formula 1-style fabrication and testing methods. Early proof-of-concept work has already yielded tangible results; a project involving a prototype cryogenic jet engine, which uses supercooled liquid hydrogen, has resulted in nine new patent filings. Rolls-Royce intends to apply these developments to its future narrowbody engine designs. This pilot mission was supported by philanthropic gifts from Lord Sainsbury of Turville and Peter Bennett, alongside support from Rolls-Royce.

Projections shared at the summit estimate that the technologies emerging from this facility could contribute as much as £30 billion to the UK economy and generate up to 10,000 skilled jobs over the next ten years. Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, emphasized that the success of these goals relies on collaboration beyond the university walls.

Other officials, including Lord Vallance, Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, noted that the laboratory provides a model for turning world-class research into growth. Professor Julia Sutcliffe, Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Business and Trade, added that such mission-led approaches are essential for remaining internationally competitive.

Institutional Context

The new facility acts as an evolution of the original Whittle Lab, which opened in 1973 and was named for Sir Frank Whittle, the RAF officer and Cambridge alumnus recognized as the creator of the jet engine. The original site has historically generated roughly 10 per cent of the university’s industrial research income and has earned the Gas Turbine Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 15 times.

Financial support for the National Centre for Propulsion and Power includes £14.6 million in grant funding from the ATI Programme, which is a partnership between the Aerospace Technology Institute, the Department for Business and Trade, and Innovate UK. Additionally, the event celebrated the establishment of the Hatton Professorship of Sustainability, funded by a £7 million endowment that combines resources from Trinity College, the Hatton Trust, and the university. This professorship was established to mark the coronation of the King.

Collaboration and Future Outlook

The summit emphasized the need for coordination across the UK’s existing innovation landscape. Attendees included representatives from the Henry Royce Institute, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the Harwell Campus, the Silverstone Technology Cluster, and the Manufacturing Technology Centre. The opening represents a broader effort within the Cambridge West Innovation District to shift the focus of British engineering toward rapid deployment and high-stakes innovation, as government and business leaders look to reignite the UK's industrial engine through mission-led research.
