eMedia Launches Openview Stream, Africa's First Independent FAST Platform
South African media group eMedia is entering the digital streaming market with the launch of Openview Stream, a FAST platform debuting in seven African countries. The service leverages a partnership with RunnTV to deliver free, ad-supported content across mobile and Connected TV devices.
EMedia has officially launched Openview Stream, an independent Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) platform. This development serves as a strategic expansion for the media group, extending its entertainment ecosystem beyond its traditional broadcast and satellite assets to reach audiences across the African continent. The platform marks the first major digital expansion for eMedia outside of its domestic borders, where it has maintained a portfolio including e.tv, eVOD, and Enca.
The platform was developed in collaboration with RunnTV, which serves as the technology and FAST platform partner for eMedia. By utilizing proprietary streaming technology, the service is designed to function across both mobile devices and Connected TVs. This initiative aims to align with shifting consumer habits, as increasing smart television adoption and improved broadband connectivity across Africa drive demand for digital, ad-funded content.
Media additions
The service debuted in seven markets:
- Kenya
- Ghana
- Rwanda
- Zambia
- Botswana
- Namibia
- Mauritius
Notably, the platform is currently unavailable in South Africa. This absence is considered significant, as the Openview brand is already established there as a leading free satellite television provider.
The business model for Openview Stream focuses on providing a curated mix of African, regional, and international channels at no cost to the viewer. For regional broadcasters and content owners, the platform functions as a digital distribution tool, intended to help them reach wider audiences while generating advertising revenue through a long-term partnership model.
"Openview Stream represents another important milestone in eMedia’s evolution as one of Africa’s leading entertainment businesses. Building on the success of Openview, we are extending one of our strongest consumer brands into the streaming market, ensuring audiences can continue to enjoy quality entertainment through a free, accessible viewing experience."

"Africa represents one of the most exciting growth markets for the future of television. We are proud to partner with eMedia to power Openview Stream through our FAST technology platform."

The project highlights a collaborative approach between the two entities. According to company statements, eMedia provides the regional media expertise, audience insight, and brand presence, while RunnTV supplies the technical architecture required to manage the streaming ecosystem. Manish Sinha described the partnership as a way to combine "eMedia’s established brands and deep market expertise with our technology capabilities" to create a scalable service.
Future Growth and Expansion
EMedia has outlined a phased approach to the rollout of the platform, with plans to grow its footprint over the coming months. Key areas of focus for the organization include:
- Geographic Footprint: Following the initial seven-market launch, the company intends to add further African territories to the service.
- Content Partnerships: The group plans to expand its channel portfolio and content partnerships to increase the diversity of its programming.
- Digital Ecosystem: As the service matures, the company aims to solidify its position as an independent streaming destination by integrating regional broadcasters, content creators, and advertisers into a unified digital distribution network.
The launch represents a component of the long-term digital growth strategy for eMedia, as the group continues to scale its presence in the streaming market. The platform is intended to connect viewers with regional broadcasters, creators, and international entertainment brands through a single, accessible destination.
