Chris Brown pleads guilty to affray over London nightclub attack

American R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty to a public order offence during a brief hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, avoiding a trial on more serious allegations stemming from a violent confrontation in the British capital.

The case centres on an altercation in the early hours of February 19, 2023 at the exclusive Tape nightclub located in Hanover Square, Mayfair. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Brown approached music producer Abraham Diaw on the dancefloor and struck him twice over the head with a glass bottle. Prosecutor Claire Campbell described the incident in court as a vicious and unprovoked attack inside a crowded venue. Following the initial blows, Brown's co-defendant and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu — who performs under the name HoodyBaby — joined the assault. Prosecutors stated that the victim was punched, chased, and kicked while attempting to flee through the club, ultimately requiring hospital treatment for head and knee injuries at St Mary's Hospital.

During Friday's hearing, which lasted less than five minutes, prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC applied to add an extra charge of affray to the indictment, a move accepted by all parties. When the charge was read out by a court clerk, Brown, dressed in a beige suit and dark brown tie, replied Guilty to gasps from the public gallery. Akinlolu also entered a guilty plea to the same charge. Under English law, affray involves using or threatening unlawful violence that would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their personal safety. The offence carries a maximum sentence of up to three years’ imprisonment.

As a result of the guilty pleas, more serious charges that both men had previously denied were discontinued or dropped. For Brown, these included assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. Akinlolu had also previously denied an assault charge before entering his guilty plea.

The legal process involved international enforcement steps after the two men left the UK following the attack. Arrest warrants were issued, and Brown was eventually apprehended on 15 May 2025 in Manchester after arriving for a concert tour. Police arrested him at a hotel hours after he reportedly flew in by private jet. He subsequently spent nearly a week in custody before securing release on a £5 million security payment and bail conditions that permitted international touring under strict passport-surrender rules.

Outside the central London court, a small gathering of supporters and fans waited with signs, with one individual shouting, I love you Chris as security guards escorted him. The singer's legal history includes a 2009 felony assault conviction involving his then-girlfriend Rihanna, subsequent probation violations resulting in jail time in Los Angeles, and a 2014 guilty plea for assaulting a fan in Washington.

Judge Tony Baumgartner bailed Brown and Akinlolu to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court. The judge set bail conditions permitting Brown to leave the UK, provided he returns by October 25, the day before the scheduled sentencing hearing on October 26.
