After nearly two decades of anticipation, the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has announced its official opening date for December 2026.
The long-awaited Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has finally secured an official launch schedule. Designed by the late Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Frank Gehry, the building itself functions as an immersive work of art and is set to be the largest of the Guggenheim museum network, which includes locations in Venice and Bilbao alongside the original museum in New York. The structure spans a total built-up area of 80,000 square metres. Interior gallery space accounts for 11,600 square metres across 30 galleries, while outdoor exhibition areas cover 23,000 square metres. The building's defining architectural features include ten sculptural cones that reach heights of up to 88 metres, designed to provide natural ventilation and shade while enhancing energy efficiency. Nine of these cones are clad in stainless steel mesh, with one finished in onyx and glass.
The institution will focus on modern and contemporary art produced from 1960 to the present day, with a focus on West Asia, North Africa, South Asia, and the wider region, according to statements reported by The Art Newspaper. The curatorial framework breaks away from strict linear chronology.
