Indonesian ferry fire leaves five dead and dozens missing off Java coast

An Indonesian passenger ferry caught fire in waters off the main island of Java, leaving at least five people dead and dozens missing. According to National Public Radio, the vessel was carrying hundreds of individuals when disaster struck off the coast of Sumenep regency.

The ferry, named the Mutiara Sentosa 2, departed from the East Java city of Surabaya and was bound for Makassar in South Sulawesi. On board were 232 passengers, 39 crew members, 181 vehicles consisting mostly of trucks, and an excavator. The vessel itself measures 160 meters long and 25 meters wide. Built in Japan in 1992, it originally operated on the Osaka-Shinmoji route under the name "Ferry Osaka" before being sold to Indonesia in 2015 to serve the routine connection between Java and Sulawesi.

The blaze erupted between 6 a.m. And 7 a.m. Local time on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, according to Wdiy reporting. PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, the ferry operator, contacted the Surabaya search and rescue office roughly an hour later after receiving word from the ship's captain that a fire had broken out near the northern tip of Madura island. Communication with the vessel was subsequently lost.

Authorities located the burning ship around 9:45 a.m. At a position approximately 19 nautical miles north of Buruan Sapudi island. This coordinate was established through communication with a nearby cargo vessel, the Meratus Project 3, which could not approach the burning ferry closely due to its own flammable cargo. Footage released by Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, known as Basarnas, displayed thick black smoke pouring from one side of the ship.

Videos shared on social media and messaging platforms captured terrified passengers wearing life jackets clustered on upper decks and the bridge. Some individuals jumped into the sea as orange flames consumed the vessel. A tugboat and another passing ship moved in to evacuate passengers shortly before 10 a.m.

Survivor Ahmad Abdul Karim recounted how the emergency unfolded from the lower vehicle deck.

"Someone came up from the lower deck and told us there was a fire, when we went down to check, two vehicles were already burning,"

Karim added that fanned by the wind, the flames spread with extreme speed, forcing everyone to move to the bow of the ferry in under 30 minutes.

By Sunday evening, rescue vessels had recovered five bodies and pulled 227 survivors from the water and the ship. At least 39 people remained unaccounted for. Rescue operations faced severe obstacles; a rigid inflatable boat sent from the Sumenep rescue post had to return to shore due to rough seas and high waves, while a dedicated rescue vessel dispatched from Surabaya faced a travel time of roughly six hours. The Indonesian Navy also deployed a warship to assist.

The incident highlights ongoing maritime safety concerns in Indonesia, an archipelago comprising more than 17,000 islands where ferries serve as an essential mode of transport. Disasters occur with regularity, and critics frequently point to weak safety enforcement as a contributing factor.
