Whitney Houston Gets New Mattel Barbie Collector Doll Honoring 1980s Music Video
Mattel has expanded its Barbie Signature Series with a new collector doll honoring Whitney Houston, replicating her iconic look from the 1987 music video.
Mattel has expanded its Barbie Signature Series by introducing a collector doll dedicated to the late music icon Whitney Houston. The launch captures her distinct aesthetic from the height of her pop career and arrives alongside milestone recognitions, including The Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2026 New Jersey Hall of Fame Capstone Event honoring four decades of the singer's impact, according to reporting by multiple outlets.
The collectible was first unveiled on Saturday, 8 August 2026, at The Whitley Atlanta hotel during the fifth annual Legacy of Love Gala. The event is hosted annually by the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation as a charity gathering. According to Mattel, the launch date also coincides with the singer's birthday on Aug. 9.
Media additions
The doll draws direct inspiration from the singer's vibrant look in the 1987 music video for "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)." It features a replica of the purple tank dress, colorful drop earrings, and detailed eye makeup from the original shoot, accompanied by a miniature microphone and stand, according to PA Media/dpa reporting. The roughly 12-inch-tall doll also replicates the star's signature 1980s fringe, long curly hair, and white and blue heels.
Development of the item involved a close partnership between Mattel and Pat Houston, who serves as executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and president of the foundation, alongside partners Primary Wave Music. Pat Houston worked closely with the Barbie design team throughout the creative process to shape the doll's design, capturing the singer's iconic fashion and glamour. Nathan Baynard, Vice President and Head of Barbie at Mattel, stated that the project gives fans a meaningful way to celebrate an artist whose influence continues to resonate globally.
"Today, we celebrate more than the release of a doll, we celebrate the enduring legacy of an icon,"

Pat Houston added that the collaboration fulfilled one of the singer's dreams and expressed hope that the product would remind children and collectors that dreams have no limits, that excellence leaves a lasting imprint, and that true greatness never goes out of style. In tandem with the release, the Barbie Dream Gap Project will donate to the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation to support educational opportunities, grants, and scholarships for young people.
Whitney Houston joins a growing roster of legendary musicians featured in the Barbie Signature Series. Other honourees in the music lineup include Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue, Aaliyah, Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, David Bowie, Juan Gabriel, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Diana Ross, and Elton John.
The release arrives as the late singer continues to achieve staggering digital milestones, including accumulating over 8.8 billion streams on Spotify. Houston was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 and earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. During her illustrious career, she sold more than 220 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide, remaining the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 singles. She released her self-titled debut album in 1985 after being discovered by music executive Clive Davis, later winning six Grammy Awards out of 25 nominations before her death on Feb. 12, 2012, at the age of 48.
