Diana Bianchedi resigns as Italy national team delegation head

Diana Bianchedi has stepped down from her position as head of the Italy national team delegation. Her resignation follows public criticism from Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi and a media controversy surrounding her dual roles within Italian sports institutions.

According to Sportal, Bianchedi announced her departure in an official statement published by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). In her resignation letter, she pointed directly to remarks made by Minister Abodi.

"Following the statements made by the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, and the controversy that has arisen in the press this afternoon, I am tendering my resignation as Head of the National team's delegation,"

She added that her decision stemmed from her respect for the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), its Board, the FIGC, and sports institutions, noting that her career as an athlete and director demonstrated her integrity.

The controversy originated from a CONI Board meeting where leadership discussed a proposal by CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio to place the Italian Weightlifting Federation under special administration, as reported by Unionesarda and La Gazzetta dello Sport. During discussions, Bianchedi and fellow vice-president Marco Di Paola reportedly expressed a negative opinion on the measure before ultimately casting supportive votes.

Minister Abodi publicly criticized this voting behavior, questioning how leaders appointed on trust could maintain such apparent contradictions.

"The deputy vice president and the vice president have the right and duty to express an opinion, but if it is always contrary, they should make a choice. That role was entrusted to them within a relationship of trust,"

Abodi further noted that it made one reflect that such representative figures were unable to demonstrate entrusted trust consistently, adding that normally such relationships do not last long in terms of role and function.

Beyond the ministerial friction, structural questions had been raised regarding potential conflicts of interest. As Football Italia reported, CONI announced it was evaluating opportunities, grounds, and incompatibility regarding Bianchedi's nomination because she already held a high-ranking position as vice-president to Luciano Buonfiglio within CONI. Quotidiano Sportivo noted that stepping down from her football delegation duties clears a path for her to participate fully in upcoming CONI board votes concerning the validity of the federal presidency election.

Bianchedi had been appointed to the delegation role by FIGC President Giovanni Malagò. Malagò had previously presented her appointment as part of a cultural revolution to bring international prestige and credibility to soccer, citing her background as a two-time Olympic champion in team foil with a medical degree and leadership roles in sports management, including with the Milan-Cortina Winter Games organizing committee. The national team setup has experienced several turbulent departures within its technical staff during this period, though Bianchedi praised the squad in her farewell letter.
