On Tuesday, the Reform UK leader announced he will resign as the MP for Clacton‑on‑Sea, triggering a by‑election that he intends to contest. The decision was presented as a “people versus the establishment” showdown, with Farage insisting that the constituents of Clacton should be the ultimate judges of his conduct.

Speaking from the party headquarters, Farage said:

“I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all.”

He added that the by‑election would be “a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment, to frankly tell them where to go”. The statement also featured his repeated claim that he has “never been angrier in my life”.

The resignation comes amid investigations. Parliament’s standards commissioner is probing a £5 million gift Farage received from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. The same watchdog is also examining whether Farage should have declared financial support from George Cottrell, whose alleged assistance included security, staffing and the use of a five‑storey Georgian property near Buckingham Palace.

Labour has asked the Electoral Commission to investigate the Cottrell support, arguing that Farage’s prominence in Reform UK before his return to frontline politics makes a declaration likely required.

The Liberal Democrats have called for a parliamentary sleaze inquiry, joining calls for the standards commissioner to examine the £5 million Harborne gift. Their leader, Sir Ed Davey, described the by‑election as “a vanity project” and urged Farage to fund the contest himself, calling the move “the latest attempt to escape consequences for his biggest grift”.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has said that the crunch Clacton by-election will be a "referendum on the future of our country". Reform UK’s treasury spokesman said the party has offered to cover the by‑election costs, noting that Farage “has spoken to the CEO of Tendring District Council” and will write to Rachel Reeves to confirm the arrangement.

Farage also claimed that the media have targeted his family. He alleged that The Times published a photograph showing his daughter’s home and that Sky News “harangued” his daughter. He called the coverage “a final straw” and warned that any further intimidation would have “serious consequences”. Sky has said it did not contact anyone from Mr Farage’s family about the story.

Internationally, Donald Trump showed public support for Farage on his Truth Social platform, sharing a link to an article that framed the UK politician’s fight as part of a broader “anti‑Trump playbook”. Mr Trump personally called Mr Farage to congratulate him on his political success in achieving the removal of Sir Keir Starmer from No 10, The Times reported.

Reform UK's Zia Yusuf said Nigel Farage had "laid down the gauntlet to the establishment" with his sensational by-election announcement.
