Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp accused Mahmood of running scared of Housing Secretary Angela Rayner and the Labour left, arguing that Britain should not accept additional asylum seekers until illegal immigration drops close to zero. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch claimed that incoming families could leverage human rights laws to bring in extended relatives. Meanwhile, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage condemned the plan, adding if his party was in power then those arriving under Labour's schemes would not be able to stay.

Charitable and non-profit organizations, as well as universities, can apply to act as community sponsors, with the first of those arrivals expected in autumn 2027. A separate employment-sponsored refugee route is scheduled to open for applications in spring 2027, requiring corporate sponsors to provide housing and employment assistance.
