F1 to shorten grand prix race distance to 290km for 2027 season

Formula 1 grand prix race distances are set to shrink for the 2027 season, following an agreement reached by the F1 Commission during a meeting in London. The standard maximum race distance will drop from 305km to 290km, eliminating roughly two or three laps from most events on the calendar. This major operational shift has been introduced to accommodate technical adjustments to power unit regulations, specifically concerning fuel flow rates, saving teams from costly chassis redesigns while preserving wheel-to-wheel racing action.

The decision emerged following discussions between the FIA, the teams, and Formula 1 Management.

The technical catalyst behind the change involves the evolution of the sport's powertrain formula. According to reporting from Autosport, the ratio of internal combustion engine (ICE) power to electrical output is shifting. The combustion engine's output is scaling up to a 420kW figure while maximum MGU-K power drops, accompanied by a five percent increase in fuel flow to handle the reworked output. The BBC reported that because fuel tanks are housed directly within the chassis, forcing teams to expand tank sizes would have broken budget caps as outfits attempt to carry current chassis designs over into next year. Trimming the race distance removes that burden.

While the blanket 15km reduction applies universally to standard events, the Monaco Grand Prix remains an exception. Due to the unique configuration and lower average speeds of the street circuit, Monaco will retain its bespoke shorter distance of 260km.

Beyond race lengths, the F1 Commission approved modifications to how suspended races are handled. Under current regulations, a race must reach its conclusion within an overall three-hour window from its initial start time, inclusive of red-flag stoppages. This overall three-hour cap will be abolished. Instead, Race Control will operate under a mandatory "hard stop" time tailored to local daylight and environmental conditions. The fixed two-hour limit for actual racing conditions remains firmly in place.

The FIA explained that the adjustments to wet-weather and red-flag protocols are designed to ensure that the spectators have the best possible chance to enjoy a full race if disruptions occur. Protracted safety car periods or barrier repairs have frequently eaten away the three-hour window before racing could resume safely.

Free practice formats are also in line for an upgrade. The FIA agreed to grant greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions when red flags cause lengthy delays. Historically, practice extensions were restricted primarily to sprint weekends, but regular grand prix events will now benefit from similar safeguards to compensate for lost track time.

On the technical front, the Commission agreed to scrap gearbox homologation for 2027. Following recommendations from the Sporting Advisory Committee and manufacturer working groups, suppliers will regain development freedom over elements such as gear ratios, avoiding a rigid freeze on transmission specifications.

Before these updates enter the official rulebook, the package requires formal ratification from the FIA World Motor Sport Council. That final step is widely anticipated to be a formality when the council convenes virtually on October 15.
