Sophie Ecclestone breaks England wicket record as Lord’s hosts first Test
Lord's hosted its inaugural women's Test match in a landmark event, featuring Sophie Ecclestone breaking England's international wicket-taking record.
History was made at Lord’s, as the home of cricket hosted its first-ever women’s Test match. The event, which arrives 142 years after the venue began hosting international fixtures, served as a landmark moment for the sport. The day began with a ceremonial acknowledgment of past generations, as more than 50 former England players gathered on the outfield to ring the bell, signalling the commencement of a long-awaited chapter for the women’s game. Many of those who gathered had played before women were permitted in the Long Room, and the group included 94-year-old Anne Sanders alongside 32-year-old Alex Hartley.
The atmosphere at the ground was marked by both celebration and reflection. Reporting notes that more than 10,000 were at Lord’s for the opening day. This follows a 2023 report from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket, which had previously criticised the venue for remaining a space predominantly for men. Portraits of historical figures, including Enid Bakewell, Mary Duggan, Jan Brittin, and Myrtle Maclagan, were unveiled in the Long Room before play, while pyrotechnics marked the start of the proceedings.

On the pitch, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt won the toss and elected to bowl. The strategy yielded early success, with Lauren Filer becoming the first woman to claim a Test wicket at Lord’s, dismissing Shafali Verma for a duck in the second over. Lauren Bell followed by clean-bowling Yastika Bhatia, leaving India at 37 for two. India mounted a spirited recovery led by Smriti Mandhana, who scored 83, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who reached a half-century before falling to a sharp, turning delivery from debutant Mady Villiers. Deepti Sharma provided a resilient 57, but India’s innings ultimately concluded at 285.
The final session was defined by the performance of Sophie Ecclestone, who secured three wickets in six balls to end the visitors' resistance. By dismissing Sayali Satghare leg before wicket, Ecclestone surpassed Katherine Sciver-Brunt to become England’s all-time leading wicket-taker across all three international formats. Ecclestone finished the day with three for 68.
Issy Wong, who secured the wicket of Mandhana, noted the squad's commitment to the format. Wong said, As a group we love Test cricket and we want more in the calendar.
She emphasised that the current players view this match as a starting point rather than a solitary occasion. Fellow bowler Lauren Filer also contributed to the attack, reaching speeds over 79mph during her spells.
England’s response in the final 45 minutes of play saw them reach 21 for one. The hosts lost the wicket of Tammy Beaumont, who is set to retire from international cricket following the conclusion of this match, trapped leg before wicket by Kranti Gaud. Maia Bouchier and former captain Heather Knight remained at the crease at the close of play.
