ANKARA (Sputnik) – The United Kingdom notified Turkey that its warship will enter the Black Sea in early May, a source from the Turkish Foreign Ministry told Sputnik.
“We have received a notification from the UK about the passage of its warship through the Bosphorus, scheduled for the first week of May,” the source said.
According to the outlet, a Type 45 destroyer, armed with anti-aircraft missiles, and a Type 23 anti-submarine frigate will be separated from the UK’s carrier task force in the Mediterranean Sea and will depart for the Bosphorus in solidarity with Kiev amid tensions on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
It is specified that in case the British ships are threatened by the Russian naval forces, the United Kingdom will send its F-35B fighters and Merlin helicopters, deployed on the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Mediterranean.
Since last March Ukraine, backed by Western countries, has accused Russia of concentrating its forces near the conflict zone in Donbas. The Kremlin does not deny the movement of troops to the border, but has said that the movements are aimed at ensuring national security in response to the concentration of NATO forces near the border with Russia.
